Few decisions are so lasting as those we make regarding our final resting places. Some of us have a very firm conception of what that should look like. Some are very assured that a traditional burial is the way to go. Others aren’t so sure. And many are just looking for some options. If you’re looking into cremations in or near Whiteland, IN, note that there are professionals in your area prepared to walk you through the process and discuss various alternatives. Cremation might not be the right solution for everyone, but it is an increasingly popular option that now rivals burial as Americans’ solution of choice. That’s no coincidence.
One of the reasons people are increasingly turning to cremation is the every extent to which it creates so many options when it comes to one’s cremated remains. There are a lot of things you can do with those remains these days. The Cremation Institute lists 52 different things you can do with a loved one’s ashes. US Urns Online came up with 27 different possibilities.
As Lucy Berry explained for AL.com, “With cremation and non-traditional funeral services on the rise, it's no wonder more families are seeking new ways to honor the departed after death. While traditional urns and scattering of ashes remain popular choices for Americans who choose cremation, a rising number of companies are catering to those who want something a little different for themselves or their loved ones.”
Some options are certainly more experimental than others, but it has become increasingly common to think of cremated remains as something more like artwork than an item that should be buried or hidden away. That might mean using ashes to make a tattoo, or it might mean having them sewn into a teddy bear. Clearly there is no right answer, and there are a whole lot of ideas out there.
MNN.com’s Jen Savedge suggests one particularly eco-friendly solution, suggesting, “If stashing a box of ashes on your mantle creeps you out, consider planting a tree with them. There are several companies that offer ‘living urns’ in which your loved one's ashes are mixed with other nutrients that can be used to grow a plant or tree in your yard or a place of your choosing.”
Of course, there are more traditional solutions, as well. You may always have cremated remains buried or interred. That may sound boring, but it really isn’t a bad idea, and there is a reason a lot of people still do it. It assures a common place that friends and family can visit for the rest of time. It’s permanent. It is classy. It is a perfectly fine alternative. And yes, cremated remains may be kept at home in an urn or otherwise. That works, too.
