Anthony Patsy “Tony” Oddi was born in New Britain, CT, on August 5, 1933 to the late Ascenzo and Jennie (D’Aurora) Oddi originally of Pettorano sul Gizio, Italy. He died on June 13, 2020 surrounded by his loving family. Tony attended New Britain public schools and the Moody School of Commerce and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. At the age of sixteen, Tony began a 47- year career in the retail and wholesale grocery industry, first with A&P Supermarkets and later with Roundy’s in a variety of management positions. Tony married his adored bride, Karen Mellon on June 30, 1962 and together raised five beautiful daughters.
Tony was an avid sports fan, especially of the Boston Red Sox, UCONN Women’s basketball and the Indianapolis Colts. He also enjoyed and compiled an impressive library of diecast NASCAR cars along with collectibles from several other sports. Tony took great joy in watching his grandchildren’s participation in youth sports and dance. He was a member of St. Barnabas Catholic Church and the American Legion.
In addition to his parents, Tony was predeceased by his brother, Patsy Oddi, sisters Mary Annino, Julia Arute, and Infant Maria Oddi and brother-in-law Jay Mellon.
Tony is survived by his wife Karen and his five daughters: Cheryl Oddi-Smith (Damon) and Kara Oddi Indianapolis, Andrea Oddi (companion, David Rosko) West Hartford, CT, Katy Dukes (Jeff) Indianapolis, and Robin Langston (Gary) Greenwood, as well as his nine grandchildren: Anthony J. Oddi, Nicole Smith (Chad), Damon Smith Jr. (Nikki), Jordan, Rachel, Nicholas, and Matthew Dukes, and Emily and Charles “Sammy” Langston and his great grandchildren, Diem Smith and Chad Bohannon. He is also survived by sister-in-law Laureen Rubino and brother-in-law Tyrone Mellon (Janet) as well as several loving nieces and nephews from the New England area.
A private family visitation will be held. The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 17, 2020, 11:30 a.m., in St. Barnabas Catholic Church. Please be advised that masks are mandatory for attendance. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contribution would be gratefully welcomed by the St. Vincent De Paul Society of St. Barnabas Church.
