Arthur M. Thornbury, 90, passed away June 24, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Thornbury was born August 12, 1926, in Cincinnati, to the late Walter Forno and Coletta (Schick) Thornbury.
He proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II on the USS Breton. Art earned a degree in accounting from the University of Cincinnati. He was a long time employee of the United States Postal Service, retiring as an internal auditor. A devout Catholic, Mr. Thornbury was a member of St. Barnabas Catholic Church, formerly a member of St. Jude Catholic Church, and a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3660. Always one to stay active, he was an avid golfer, Master Bridge player, and would often walk ten miles a day. Art was an extremely generous man who gave to many charities and was always an advocate for those in need. He will be fondly remembered by his loving family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, James, Walter Jr. and Anthony; sisters, Betty and Margaret.
Survivors include his wife, Arvilla (Roth) Thornbury, to whom he was united in marriage October 17, 1953; sons, Greg, Kevin, and Eric Thornbury; daughters, Cheryl (James) McCarthy, Kim (Tom) Peters, Rose (Tim) Medlock, and Carol (Jim) Lippert; sister, Coletta Valentine; 13 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 29, 2017, 4 to 8 p.m., in the Daniel F. O’Riley Funeral Home, 6107 S. East St. (US 31 S.). Additional visitation will begin at 10 a.m., Friday, June 30, 2017, at St. Barnabas Catholic Church, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Barnabas Catholic Church, St. Vincent de Paul Society, or to the St. Vincent Hospital Nurses’ Alumni Association.
