Donald J. Okey, 83, lifelong Indianapolis resident, passed away December 28, 2018. Mr. Okey was born February 19, 1935, to the late Robert J. Okey and Charlotte (Robertson) Lee.
He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1953 and proudly served in the United States Marine Corp. His career with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department began in 1957, and he retired in 1989 with the permanent rank of Captain to accept the position of Superintendent with the Indiana State Excise Police. He was honored in 1970 as a Kentucky Colonel and received a commendation from Governor Otis Bowen in 1973 for outstanding contributions to law enforcement. Mr. Okey grew up in St. Patrick Catholic Parish and was a charter member of St. Jude Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Jane (Smith) Okey in 1985.
Survivors include two daughters, Tammy Mattingly and Sherrie Dilk; grandchildren, Justin Mattingly, Taylor Mattingly, Jordyn Mattingly, Kevin Dilk, Krista (Nick) Brady; a great grandchild expected in March.
Visitation will be on Thursday, January 3, 2019, 4 to 8 p.m., in the Daniel F. O’Riley Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 4, 2019, in the funeral home.
