John Leo Dwenger, 90, of Indianapolis, passed away on October 22, 2023. John was born in Indianapolis, to the late John & Margaret Dwenger. John married the love of his life, Lou Anne (Owens) Dwenger on June 14, 1958, and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year. John earned his bachelor’s degree at Hanover College where he earned 11 varsity awards in football, basketball and baseball. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity at Hanover. John also holds an honorable service in the United States Army. John went on to attend Butler University where he completed his master’s degree. John began his teaching career at Sacred Heart High School, where he taught Business and Driver’s Education. John had a passion for sports and was the head basketball coach, assistant football coach and assistant baseball coach, through 1962. He went on to spend the next 30 plus years in Perry Township, at Southport High School. Here, he continued his love of sports and led the Southport baseball team to six sectional championships, two regional championships and one county championship. John was inducted into the Hanover College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996. John loved to golf, travel, play cards and spend time with his granddaughters.
John is survived by his loving wife, Lou Anne Dwenger, sons; John D. (Carol) Dwenger and Dick D. (Jackie) Dwenger and granddaughters; Erin (Connor) Brehm, Lindsey (Scott) Mann, Kaitlyn Dwenger and Nicole Dwenger.
John is preceded in death by his siblings; William Dwenger, Mary Vincent and Shirley Dwenger.
John’s Life Celebration® visitation will be Monday, October 30, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at O’Riley – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, 6107 S. East Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46227. A Celebration of Life will follow at 12:00 PM. Entombment will be immediately following at Calvary Cemetery in Indianapolis.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation can be made in John’s honor to: Southport High School Athletics (971 E. Banta Road, Indianapolis, IN. 46227) or The American Heart Association (6500 Technology Center Dr., Unit 100, Indianapolis, IN., 46278). Envelopes will be provided at the Funeral Home.
