Joseph John Black, 75 of Indianapolis, passed away Sunday, October 23, 2022, at Franciscan Hospice House. He was born September 11, 1947, in Indianapolis to Alexander and Marie (Preda) Black.
Joe graduated from Decatur Central in 1965 and from Indiana State University in 1970. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy on the USS Puget Sound from 1970 – 1974.
Joe worked at IUPUI in the mail services department then for NCAA mail service retiring in 2020.
He was a member of Mount Pleasant Christian Church. Joe was a longtime, diehard Cubs fan. He enjoyed watching all sports, playing golf, listening to music, and taking a good nap. But mostly he loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife Mary Anne Shockley Black, children Elizabeth “Beth” (Ryan) Spoonmore, Brett (Claire) Black, brother Earl Black, sister Karen Black, grandchildren Moses Black, Ingrid Black, Harper Spoonmore and Lincoln Spoonmore.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Mary Ann Black Bartl and brother Charles Black.
Visitation for Joe will be Wednesday, October 26 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at O’Riley Branson Funeral Service and Crematory, 6107 South East Street, Indianapolis. Visitation will also be Thursday from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at the funeral home with his Celebration of Life at 11:00 AM. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.
