Nathan was afflicted with a rare genetic disorder called Late Infantile Batten disease. The Nathan’s Battle Foundation was formed to develop therapies for this disease. Nathan was one of the first participants in the first human gene therapy clinical trial for this disease. Other therapeutic developments were spawned from this research directly and indirectly leading to FDA approved drugs for this disease. Nathan was a true champion for this disease leading the way for therapies helping future generations of afflicted children to have therapy possibilities. Nathan is a hero to many. A disease that was once thought incurable now has therapy options. Nathan may have lost his battle but has helped to win the war against this disease.
