Noreen Commons VanSlyke, 84, of Indianapolis and formerly of Franklin, passed away September 8, 2017. She was born October 5, 1932 to Patrick M. and Louise (Stuppe’) Commons in Indianapolis; she was the youngest of ten children. Noreen worked at Franklin College for 20 years before retiring. Before her tenure at Franklin College, she worked part-time at Erdman’s Pharmacy in Franklin, which she co-owned with her husband Bill and friends, Herb and Janice Nees. Noreen was a faithful member of St. Mark Catholic Church where she served on the welcoming committee. She loved playing cards and board games with her family, playing bridge with her friends, and traveling with family in their travel trailer.
In addition to her parents, Noreen was also preceded in death by her husband William E. VanSlyke; her daughter, Sharon Honey; her son Christopher VanSlyke; her son-in-law, Ted Honey; siblings, Norbert, Anna Catherine, Margaret, Leo, Julian, Jim, Ted, and the Reverends Tom and Pat Commons.
Survivors include her children, Elaine (Rob) Williams of Lebanon, Indiana, Stephen (Theresa) VanSlyke of Indianapolis, and Richard (Windy Tamplin) VanSlyke of Geneva, Illinois; daughter-in-law, Myrena VanSlyke of Papillian, Nebraska; her grandchildren, April, Sarah, Bryan, Becky, Debbie, Matt, Jon, Sorrel, Farren, and Will; her great grandson, Owen; long-time friend, Janice Nees; and many nephews and nieces.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of Noreen VanSlyke from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at the Daniel F. O’Riley Funeral Home, 6107 S. East Street, Indianapolis. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at St. Mark Catholic Church. Morning prayers will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Entombment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Indianapolis immediately following Mass.
