Philip Joseph Milto, 26, affectionately known as “P.J”, passed away peacefully at home on May 30, 2024. P.J. was born August 25, 1997, in Indianapolis to Philip and Tricia (Wood) Milto. He is also survived by his brothers, Nick and Joey.
Like his brother Nathan, P.J. was afflicted with a rare genetic disorder called Late Infantile Batten disease. The Milto Family has been heroic in their efforts to provide change and much research and development for those with a similar diagnosis. The Nathan’s Battle Foundation was formed to develop therapies for this disease. Scientific research around the country was performed in many different therapeutic approaches. Other therapeutic developments were spawned from this research directly and indirectly leading to FDA approved drugs for this disease. A disease that was once thought incurable now has therapy options thanks to P.J. and Nathan. At the time of his death P.J. was the oldest living individual with Late Infantile Batten disease.
P.J. was a kind, loving, happy young man with an infectious smile that would light up any room. He made everyone smile. He taught all who knew him many life lessons and was an inspiration to all. He attended the Indiana School for the Blind and Center Grove. His family is members of St. Barnabas Catholic Church.
P.J. is survived by his loving and devoted parents, Phil and Tricia; brothers, Nicholas (Lindsey) and Joey Milto; grandmother, Wilma McDermott; his aunts and uncles, Joanna Milto-Bergin (Kevin Bergin), Jodi Milto (JD Miller), Tony (Angela) Milto, Rosemarie Milto, Stacey (Keith) Pennington and his cousins, Anthony, Sophia and Pauly Milto, Dominic St. Peters, Alyssa Pennington and Kelsey Pennington. He was preceded in death by his big brother, Nathan; nephew, August Hains Milto; and grandparents, Philip and Angeline (Caito) Milto and Richard Wood.
