Richard Kearney “Skip” Engel, 81, longtime Indianapolis resident, passed away February 26, 2025. Mr. Engel was born January 12, 1944, to the late Henry Kearney and Sally (Ragan) Engel. Skip married JoAnn (Noble) Engel on June 15, 1968, and she survives.
Mr. Engel graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1966 and earned an MBA degree in 1968 from Indiana University. He was a Certified Public Accountant, eventually owning and operating Henry K. Engel & Company, retiring in 2019. In addition to his capable and trustworthy work, he was known for being a good friend to his many clients.
Mr. Engel was a faithful member of St. Matthew Catholic Church since 1976. He was member of the Criterion Board of Directors, past president of the CYO Board, and longtime treasurer of the St. Matthew Men’s Club. Skip enjoyed coaching CYO football and basketball through the years and was appropriately honored with the St. John Bosco Award. An avid Notre Dame fan, Skip will be fondly remembered for his great laugh and for his ability to say a great amount in very few words… but also his penchant for telling long stories. His memory will be cherished by his loving family and many friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Engel.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, JoAnn; children, Mark (Cassandra) Engel, Amy Engel, and Ann (Rusty) Kinney; grandchildren, Caroline and Allison Engel; Freddie, George, and Sally Kinney.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 12 Noon on Monday, March 3, 2025, in St. Matthew Catholic Church. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12 Noon. Entombment will take place at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the CYO.
