Shirley R. Haines

July 10, 1928 — January 16, 2025

Indianapolis

Shirley R. Haines, a beloved wife, dedicated educator, and compassionate friend, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025, at the age of 96 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Shirley was born on July 10, 1928, in her maternal grandparents home in Marion, Indiana, to the late Glen & Ruth (Patch) Custard in Indianapolis. Throughout her life, Shirley embraced every moment with warmth, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to serve others, leaving an enduring impact on those fortunate enough to know her.

Shirley's career was marked by a deep passion for education and nurturing young minds. Her journey began at the Methodist Conference Center at Lake Wawasse in northern Indiana before she made the vibrant community of Naperville, Illinois, her home. There, she and her beloved husband, Garth Haines, devoted their professional lives to enriching the experience of students at North Central College. For 27 years, Shirley served as the Registrar, a position she cherished deeply, dedicating herself to helping students navigate their academic journeys. Her home became a sanctuary for foreign students seeking a welcoming place to stay while they pursued their studies, reflecting her generous spirit and love for people.

In her later years, after moving to the south side of Indianapolis, Shirley continued to foster connections through her enduring faith. A committed member of Christ United Methodist Church, she shared her musical talents on the piano and organ, enhancing the worship experience for many. Together with Garth, she was instrumental in creating a program that uplifted mentally challenged adults, further evidencing her lifelong dedication to serving those in need.

Those who knew Shirley will fondly remember her infectious love for life. With a heart wide open, she cherished her relationships with people, especially her dogs, whom she adored as cherished companions. A nature enthusiast, she found joy in the beauty of clouds and the great outdoors. Her upbringing in the countryside instilled in her a profound respect for all living creatures; she famously refused to eat turkey or chicken, regarding them not as meals but as friends.

Shirley’s remarkable journey was brightened by her marriage to Garth, the love of her life, whom she wed in 1948. Together, they celebrated 54 beautiful years of marriage, filled with laughter, love, and mutual respect. Their bond exemplified a partnership rooted in devotion, friendship, and shared commitment to their community.

With a servant's heart and a self-proclaimed  "people person," Shirley's legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched. Her gentle spirit, unwavering faith, and dedication to service continue to inspire those she leaves behind.

Shirley is survived by her brother; Galen (Helen) Custard, nephew; David Larson, niece; Nola Conner, and great-nieces; Heather LeRow and Erin Caruso.

Shirley is preceded in death by her loving husband; Garth Haines.
