Susanne C. "Sue" Schmitz Biemer, 100, died April 25 at Greenwood Village South.
She was born in Indianapolis on March 20, 1916, the daughter of John W. and Katherine Gehl Schmitz. She graduated from Holy Trinity Grade School in 1930, and St. John's Academy in 1932. She was a devout Catholic.
A skilled seamstress, she began at age six by sewing doll clothes. She went to work for L. S. Ayres when she was 18 years old, and was head of women's alterations for the entire Ayres chain of department stores when she retired in 1978. She and her department were responsible for perfecting the "Ayres Look" for generations of women. She also taught sewing in night school at Arsenal Technical High School during the 1940s.
Sue was also an avid landscape designer and gardener.
In 1972 she married Francis C. Biemer, and became the beloved "Granny Sue" to his three children and their children.
Survivors include her stepchildren, Martin E. Biemer, Carol Ann Crawford, and Michael F. Biemer, along with seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by four nieces, a nephew and several grand-nephews, grand-nieces, great-grand-nephews and great-grand-nieces.
She was preceded in death by her her husband, parents, three sisters and a brother.
Calling will be from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2016 at the Daniel F. O'Riley Funeral Home, 6107 S. East St. (US Hwy 31 South), Indianapolis, IN 46227. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon in Calvary Cemetery Chapel. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. Online condolences may be shared with the family at orileyfuneralhome.com.
