Denise Marie Smith

Denise Marie Smith, 56, of Indianapolis, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2020 at Community South Hospital after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Denise was born on June 18, 1963 in Indianapolis to Donald Alerding and Dorothy (Toney) Caldwell.

Having a green thumb, Denise was very active in her flower beds and vegetable garden. Her love for being outside was reflected through her love of hummingbirds and butterflies. Being a woman of faith, Denise was a member at Stone’s Crossing Church in Greenwood. Denise had a love for small children and spent many hours volunteering in the nursery at the church. Denise loved to watch her Indianapolis Colts play. She could often be found watching some of her favorite TV shows such as, When The Heart Calls, Heartland, and Blue Bloods. Denise will be remembered as a kind and loving woman who was highly devoted to her family.

Denise was preceded in death by her father, Donald Alerding.

Survivors include her husband, David H. Smith; her mother, Dorothy Caldwell; her children, Jacob Matthew Cooper and Jessica Marie Cooper; siblings, Doug, David, Danny, and Doyle Alerding, and Darlene Engle; grandchildren, Ava Rose Oliver, Nora Elaine Oliver, and another baby girl due to arrive in May.

A memorial service is being planned for Saturday, June 13, 2020 at a private location. Final care and cremation arrangements are entrusted to the O’Riley Funeral Home, 6107 South East Street, Indianapolis.   4. What a great person we had the pleasure of knowing for so many years! I remember the days of watching our “little” kids playing together and all the events we shared at Homecroft ߘ The birthday parties, the playground, and the stories we shared. Denise always kept us posted when National Night Out was gonna take place and we looked forward to seeing her and all her family each time! Loved keeping in touch!   7. As most of you now know my beautiful and loving wife, Denise was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday March 8, 2020. She is survived by me her husband David, her son Jacob and her daughter Jessica and two lovely grandchildren, Ava Rose and Nora Elaine. I thank you all for your lovely words of support and comfort during our time of grief. My wife had a strong love for nature and all of the beauty that the good Lord provides for us in it. With this in mind, we will have a memorial gathering, Saturday June 13, 2020 from 2-4. Location to be provided at a later date.
