Angela Marie (Hoying) Schlegel

Angela Marie Hoying Schlegel, 92, has joined Louis for a polka in the sky.  Angie died peacefully at home on January 21, 2023.

Angie was born on July 6, 1930 in Youngstown –Ohio to Robert Anthony Hoying and Catherine (Driscoll) Hoying who are both deceased.  Angie was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Schlegel, brother James Hoying and grandson Cooper Jones.

Angie and Louis were married 60 years and had eight healthy children – Christine (Bret) Robinson, Martha (David) Jones, Kurt Schlegel, Paul (Marsha) Schlegel, Gerard (Eileen) Schlegel, Peter (Theresa) Schlegel, Mary (Mark) Bastable and Heidi Traylor. Angie had 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, who all ABSOLUTELY adored her.  She is also survived by a sister, Mary Gunderman.

Angie graduated from nursing school in 1952 from Fairview Park Hospital in Cleveland.  Angie and Louis met on a blind date and married in 1952.  Louis and Angie started their very large family soon after and for 24 consecutive years had at least one irritable teenager living under their roof.  Angie and Louis lived in Cleveland, Ohio until 1967 when an opportunity in Indianapolis called.

Angie worked as a kindergarten assistant for many years at St. Roch Catholic School.  Angie found much joy in teaching the little ones to read.

Angie loved crocheting, sewing, competitive dishcloth knitting, playing bridge, St. Roch quilting club and going to lunch with her many friends.  Angie also loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Most of all, Angie had the faith of a million men.  Her Catholic faith and devotion to Mary was unshakable as she died with a rosary in her hand.

Special thanks to Kurt Schlegel who lovingly cared for her for many years. A big thank you to Mary Schlegel Bastable who eased her to the next life with such love, care and dignity. You both are appreciated deeply by your family.

  1. Mrs Schlegel as she will
always be to us Price kids is a beautiful blessing and one of my moms best friends! I remember the year’s they made Christmas cookies, mostly laughing, some rum,and the fun, joy,and looking forward to the year. I won’t forget her smile and laugh and the fun we Price kids had at their house! My prayers are with you and I’m thankful our faith will get us through till we are together again with them

  2. I remember Aunt Angie’s chuckling laugh and her wonderful smiles when we were visiting! Thanks for letting me eat the chocolate chip cookie dough! My prayers and love are with all the Schlegel/Hoting families as you move forward.

  3. If you every met Angie, she became your friend. I was fortunate enough to meet her when her Mary attended school with our oldest child, Clare, at St. Roch. Immediately she and I were friends. I remember when she called me because Lou had found a deal on cases of bananas, and since we had such a large family too, she called to see if I wanted some. Whenever she was around, she was smiling…if not smiling, Angie was laughing. Once we were discussing our mail and saying we only received bills. I mailed her a small scarf. Soon she mailed me a card full of coins! Postage had to cost her a fortune! Last year I saw her with a son at Mass at St. Roch’s and I stopped her after Mass to give her a hug. It was wonderful to connect with this awesome, sweet lady again. God bless you, Angie. Thank you for always brightening my day.

  4. To all the Schlegel Family…..God called home another one of our St. Roch saints this past week! Angie Schlegel was one of the kindest and most gentle women I ever met! She was an angel in our midst.

Many thanks to all your family for the gorgeous Christmas and Easter flowers you donated to St. Roch for the altar and sanctuary every year. We had the BEST church flowers in the whole state!

And thank you for all your generous donations for every St. Roch fundraiser….AND your generous donations for the poor! I especially appreciate your help for Charlotte and Joe-Joe for all their holiday meals. May God bless you both, Louie and Angie, and all your family.

    Love…Bonnie Schott
