Colette Dalene Whelan

 

Colette Dalene Whelan, age 89, of Indianapolis, formerly of Peoria, passed away on Friday, September 15, 2023, at her Indianapolis home.

Born March 9, 1934, in Peoria, she was a daughter to Edward Dale and Gladys Mohr (Meeker). She was a graduate of Academy of Our Lady High School.  In 1958, she married the love of her life, James Whelan, in St. Bernard Catholic Church in Peoria.

She was a homemaker her entire life raising four children.

Dalene was a past member of TOBY Club where she met her husband. She was a fantastic cook, passing on many family recipes which are now favorites of her children and grandchildren.  Dalene enjoyed traveling with her family.  She enjoyed playing the piano and gave piano lessons to many youngsters.  She will be remembered as a loving and loyal wife, mother and grandmother. Dalene cherished the opportunity to travel with her husband to their favorite places. She was dearly loved and will be truly missed.

Survivors include two sons, Kevin Whelan of Seminole, FL, and Timothy (Tere) Whelan of San Antonio, TX; one daughter, Maureen Whelan of Indianapolis, IN; her brother Kent Mohr (Gloria); six grandchildren, Mariah, Corinne, Daniel, Kyle, Caitlin and Aimee; as well as five great-grandchildren.

Dalene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband James; one daughter, Kathleen Walters (John); and one sister, Sondra Louise Wilson (Wes).

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 16, 2023, at 9:00 am at Resurrection Cemetery Chapel, 7519 N Allen Rd., Peoria, IL. Recitation of the rosary will be at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00 a.m.  A private burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Services entrusted by O’Riley – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory.

Memorials in Dalene’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

  1. Aunt Dalene was kind. She was sweet. There was never any rush. People were important to her. I don’t remember anything frustrating her, when I was a kid in the family. Her smile is steady and sure.
