Kala Athena Steiner, a radiant light that graced our lives with laughter and boundless love, departed this world far too soon on October 7, 2025, in Indianapolis, Indiana, at the tender age of nine. Born on November 8, 2015, in Terre Haute, Indiana, Kala flourished amidst a tapestry of familial affection, her vibrant spirit leaving indelible traces on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In her fleeting years, Kala was not just a daughter; she was the embodiment of joy for Ryan and Amanda Cook Steiner, her adoring parents. Her life was a canvas painted with cherished memories, particularly the exhilarating marathons she raced with her father in her beloved “Chariot,” where laughter echoed on the tracks of the Indy Mini Marathon and Hennepin 50K races. Each stride they took together was a testament to their unbreakable bond, an everlasting reminder of the love they shared.
Kala’s personality was a delightful mix of tenderness and exuberance. She adored snuggles and kisses, found solace in the comfort of her Binky, and lit up at the sounds of “Bridge, Rock, Waterfall” a sweet echo of the joy that filled her days. Her playful innocence and radiant smile were infectious, drawing everyone close to her into a world brimming with wonder.
The family structure that enveloped her in warmth extended well beyond her parents. She was cherished by her grandparents, Danny “Poppo” and Rita “Grammy” Cook, and her grandmother Kathy Fuelle. Kala’s great aunt, Nana Susie (Michael) Tingley, and a multitude of aunts, uncles and cousins provided a supportive embrace that enveloped her in the warmth of family gatherings and joyous celebrations.
Supporting her in adventures and play were her special friends, especially Grace and the Magnificent 7, whose love and camaraderie added color to her youthful escapades, creating memories that shimmer like stars in the night sky.
As we gather to honor and celebrate Kala’s life, we are invited to reflect upon the joy she so effortlessly spread. On Friday, November 7, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, family and friends will come together for a visitation at O’Riley – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, located at 6107 S East St, Indianapolis, IN. On Saturday, November 8, 2025 a Celebration of Life will be at 10:00 AM, culminating in remembrance, as we recount tales of her vivacious spirit and the love that enveloped her time among us. Following the service the family would like everyone to join them in participating or cheering Kala in her final Victory Lap.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Kala’s name may be made to Ainsley’s Angels of America, PO Box 265, Russiaville, Indiana 46979. Please enter NCI – Kala in the memo line.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Riley Children’s Hospital for their love and support during Kala’s life.
Though Kala’s journey has come to a close, the memories she created, the love she shared, and the impact she made will remain forever etched in our hearts. Surrounded by family and love in her final moments, she left us with the beautiful reminder that love knows no age, and the bonds of affection last for eternity. As we bid farewell to this little star, we carry her spirit within us, brightening our paths and igniting our hearts with each passing day.
