Mary E. Schott, a beloved wife, mother, grandma, and GiGi, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025, in Greenwood, Indiana, at the age of 86. Mary was born on October 18, 1939, in Vincennes, Indiana to the late Arnold & Henrietta Shackelford, Mary brought sunshine and laughter wherever she went, leaving a legacy of warmth and love that will resonate through generations.

Mary dedicated many years to being a stay-at-home mom, a role she cherished deeply. She was more than just a caregiver for her children; she extended her nurturing spirit to the children in the neighborhood, embodying the heart of a true community matriarch. Once her son, John, entered high school, she transitioned to a career as a seamstress in the men’s suit department at Sears Roebuck Company, showcasing her incredible talents as a master seamstress. Mary had a creative flair, finding joy in crocheting and quilting, works of art crafted by her skilled hands.

Education was a key part of Mary’s early life, having graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic Girl’s School in Indianapolis, where she likely began to cultivate the strong values of faith and community that would define her later years. After high school, she met the love of her life, John “Jack” Schott, embarking on a beautiful journey together that began with their marriage on October 3, 1959. This remarkable partnership lasted an impressive 66 years, filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support for one another.

Mary’s vibrant personality shone brightly through her playful, feisty spirit, earning her the affectionate title of “the life of the party.” Her laughter was contagious, and her joy multiplied when her family gathered around her. Cooking and gardening were some of her favorite pastimes, providing her with a genuine happiness that was evident to all who experienced her warmth. She found solace near the water during her winters spent as a snowbird in Fort Myers, Florida, where the calmness of the surroundings matched the serenity, she felt in her heart.

Mary was not just a loving wife and devoted mother; she was also a proud GiGi to her grandchildren, whose lives were enriched by her boundless love. Her cherished pups and canaries filled her home with joy and companionship, reflecting her nurturing spirit.
