Tammy M. Okey, a cherished daughter, mother, sister, and friend, departed this world on January 27, 2026, in Indianapolis, Indiana, at the age of 64. Tammy was born on November 6, 1961, in Beech Grove, Indiana, to the late Donald and Barbara Okey. Tammy lived her life with a zest for joy, kindness, and a spirit that uplifted those around her.
Tammy was a proud 1980 graduate of Roncalli Catholic High School, later earning her associate’s degree from Ball State. An independent and strong-willed woman, she faced a long battle with cancer over the past nine years with unwavering faith and exceptional bravery. Her indomitable spirit shone brightly in the lives she touched—she was a giver at heart, believing wholeheartedly in the power of helping others.
Her home was a whirlwind of love, laughter, and celebration, as she embraced every opportunity to gather family and friends. Tammy had a magical touch for organizing parties, seamlessly transforming each occasion into a cherished memory, complete with decorations that made everyone feel special—whether for her children’s birthdays, family milestones, or casual get-togethers with friends. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her children, all of whom lived within walking distance, allowing her home to be a haven filled with love and laughter. The door to her home was always swinging open, inviting those she loved to come in and share in her warmth.
A devoted mother, Tammy, was actively engaged in her children’s lives, never missing a chance to support them in their endeavors. She enthusiastically cheered for her daughters during dance and cheerleading events, proudly making snacks and bows to show her support. For her son, she could be found courtside at basketball games and encouraging him as he pursued mountain climbing adventures. Tammy ensured every moment was a celebration of their accomplishments.
Tammy’s love extended beyond her family; she was a passionate animal lover, finding solace and companionship in her loyal German Shepherd, Khali, who was her faithful companion throughout her illness. The bond they shared brought her immense comfort during challenging times.
In her leisure time, Tammy had simple pleasures that brought her joy. Whether it was indulging in McDonald’s fries and Diet Coke or reveling in the magic of Disney—her television was often graced with Disney films during the last months of her life. Her fondness for Donny Osmond added a delightful note of nostalgia and joy to her days.
Among her proudest moments were the cherished “Friday Night Dinners” shared with her beloved sister, Sherrie, and her best friend, Nancy. These gatherings were a testament to her belief in the importance of family and friendship, treasured connections that she nurtured with grace and love.
Tammy is survived by her children; Justin (Abbey) Mattingly, Taylor (Sam) Schwab, and Jordyn Mattingly, her loyal pup: Khali, sister; Sherrie Dilk, nephew; Kevin Dilk, niece; Krista (Nick) Brady, and her “adopted” grandbabies; Hazel and Knox.
A Memorial Gathering will be held at O’Riley-Branson Funeral Service & Crematory on Sunday, February 8, 2026 from 1:00pm-5:00pm. A Memorial Mass will take place at Holy Name Catholic Church in Beech Grove on Monday, February 9, 2026, at 10:00am.
Tammy M. Okey will be remembered for her unwavering compassion, her indomitable spirit, and her radiant love that enriched the lives of everyone she encountered. She leaves behind a legacy of joy, laughter, and strength, reminding us all to celebrate life and cherish the bonds we hold dear. Although she may have departed from this earthly realm, her spirit will forever resonate in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known her.

Tammy is in a much better place now – saying a prayer for her and family.
I’m so sorry to hear this news. I grew up knowing the Okey family and Tammy always brought so much sunshine to the room whenever she was around. She always had such a good and caring heart. May all of you find peace in knowing that she is in a much better place now.
My beautiful friend and sister. I guess you could say that we met before we ever met, because our mamas were school chums and best friends. We played endless hours of Uno with our sisters, we visited grandma Eleanor, we read teen magazines and cut out every picture of Donny Osmond, Michael Jackson, David Cassidy, and Bay City rollers, hanging each, and every picture on our bedroom walls and kissing them all good night:) we played their records really loud. I was there as you developed your lifelong crush on Donny! Our mamas tried to force us to go to the all girls’ high school (like they did), even making us take our entrance exams there, but we fought as a tag team, and prevailed to go to Roncalli. We shared a love for the new exercise-aerobics, and danced in the PanAm game’s opening ceremonies. You got your mama’s beautiful smile, welcoming heart, and impish cleverness, and it is reflected in your beautiful children. I love you forever my first best friend…run, dance, and sing with the angels, your beloved mama, and your daddy! See you when we get “home.”
