Betty Jane Wolsiffer, a loving matriarch and devoted member of her community, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026, in her beloved Indianapolis home of over 64 years. Betty was born on September 30, 1930, in Beech Grove, Indiana, to the late Carl & Matilda Herner. Betty was a true embodiment of kindness and warmth throughout her 95 years of life.
Growing up, Betty cultivated her nurturing spirit which would later flourish as a devoted wife and mother. She made a career out of being at home, lovingly tending to her seven children. Her joyous laughter resonated in the family home, and she skillfully managed the household with both a firm hand and a playful heart. Betty never lost sight of the importance of fun and adventure, bringing joy to her children’s lives with many treasured summer camping trips and fishing days at the lake, as well as memorable road trips to Florida. These cherished memories have been etched deeply into the hearts of her children, who hold them dear to this day.
Betty was a proud graduate of Sacred Heart High School, class of 1948. Her legacy is not only rooted in education; she was an avid learner and dedicated parishioner of St. Jude Catholic Church for 64 years, where her unwavering faith shone brightly within the community. Known affectionately by her friends as “Bingo Betty,” she delighted in weekly games of bingo and cherished her regular gatherings at “card club.” Family card games filled their home with laughter and competition, and Betty’s playful spirit always kept everyone engaged.
Beyond her love for games, Betty was often seen behind the lens as the family photographer, capturing precious moments that her loved ones could treasure forever. She was gifted in the kitchen, ensuring that everyone’s bellies were full with the delicious meals she prepared, and her culinary talents will be fondly remembered at family gatherings.
Her true joy lay in her beloved garden. With her hands in the soil, pulling weeds or mowing the lawn—an endeavor she continued with determination until the age of 90—Betty found peace and fulfillment. She dedicated herself to her yard, creating a beautiful sanctuary that reflected her loving nature.
Betty was not just a mother; she was a loving wife and a proud grandma too. Her capacity to love knew no bounds. She wore her heart on her sleeve and took every opportunity to express her pride in her kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, leaving them enveloped in affection and encouragement.
Betty is survived by her loving children; James E. (Ronda) Wolsiffer, David L. (Patricia) Wolsiffer, Thomas M. (Karen) Wolsiffer, Richard A. Wolsiffer, Steven E. (Karen) Wolsiffer, Julie A. (Kevin) McCormick, and Susan M. (Daryl) Crouch, along with 20 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great granddaughter.
Betty is preceded in death by her loving husband of 45 years; James E. Wolsiffer, brothers; Robert, John, and Carl Herner, and sisters; Dorothy Davidson, Mildred Davidson, and Charlotte McKay.
