Thomas George Dingledy of both Santa Rosa Beach, FL and Greensburg, IN passed away on July 10, 2026, in Indianapolis, IN.
He was born on August 11,1951 in Jacksonville, FL. In 1958, his family moved to Wabash, IN, his mother’s hometown. His grandfather gave him the nickname “Toby” and that’s how everyone in town knew him. He graduated from Wabash High School in 1969. He then attended Ball State University where he majored in Journalism and Education. After graduation in 1973, he taught English and journalism at Plymouth High School in Plymouth, IN for two years and then Memorial High School in St. Marys, OH for one year.
He attended Glassboro State University (now known as Rowan University) in Glassboro, NJ earning a master’s degree in public relations in 1977.
He was hired by Hooks Drug Store in 1977 to work in the public relations/marketing department and worked in Indianapolis until 1994. Hooks was acquired by Revco, and he was transferred to their headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio. He moved to Birmingham, Alabama in 1997 to work for MedPartners, Inc. While in Birmingham, he met his wife to be- Lucy, worked for Compass Bancshares and then spent 12 years with Re/Max Advantage real estate before retiring in 2016.
During his time in Birmingham, he was an active member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, an active member of the North Shelby Rotary Club, earned his Master Gardener’s certificate, and grew to love SEC football. In Florida he was a member of the Coastal Dune Lakes Advisory Board of Walton County.
He was an avid reader, movie buff, gardener, bird watcher, fisherman and traveler. He was quite the gearhead with an uncanny ability to identify the model year of any American car and some foreign ones too. He loved being a road warrior making several cross-country trips throughout the US and Canada in his convertible.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Rita, brother George and sister Christine Thieroff.
Tom is survived by his wife of 27 years, Lucy, his sons, Eric (Jessica) of Indianapolis and, Mark of Indianapolis, brothers John (Carol) of Columbus, IN and James of Indianapolis, brother-in-law Steve Thieroff of Greenfield, IN, numerous nieces and nephews, his two beloved grandchildren Rowan and Parker (who called him Papa Pokey), and former wife, Deborah Schindler Dingledy of Indianapolis.
