James “Jim” Mescall, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on December 12, 2025, in Greenwood, Indiana, surrounded by the memories he cherished and the love of those he held dear. Jim was born on May 29, 1935, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late Matthew & Frances Mescall. Jim lived a life richly woven with love, laughter, and a steadfast commitment to family.
In his vibrant 90 years, Jim shared a beautiful life with Joyce (DeCoursey) Mescall, whom he married on May 7, 1960. Their enduring partnership was a testament to true love, filled with moments that brought joy and laughter. Jim and Joyce created countless memories together, especially at their vacation home on Lake Lemon, where fishing and boating became cherished family traditions. His strong spirit shined brightest during their annual fall golf trips, where he was affectionately known as “Lefty” among friends and family, relishing each moment spent with his sons, grandson, and lifelong friends.
Jim’s life was grounded in dedication and hard work. He graduated from Cathedral Catholic High School in 1953 and went on to forge a remarkable career with Success Printing and the Indiana State Police Department, where his unmatched work ethic earned him many lifelong friendships. His time in service to the community was also marked by his honorable service in the US Navy during the Korean War, reflecting commitment to his country that he carried with pride.
Those who had the pleasure of sharing their lives with Jim will fondly remember his great sense of humor and ability to uplift spirits with ease. He had an infectious smile that could brighten even the grayest of days, often described as “goofy” by those closest to him. He was not only a figure of strength but also a source of laughter and joy, making memories that will last a lifetime.
A proud member of the Knights of Columbus (Council # 5290), Jim engaged deeply with his community, deriving immense satisfaction from helping others. He also devoted his time to coaching football, basketball, and baseball at St. Simons “Roy Road” when his children were young, demonstrating his passion for fostering the talents and dreams of the younger generation.
Jim’s proudest accomplishments were not measured in accolades or professional success, but rather in the love he showed as a devoted husband, father, and papaw. He found immense joy in attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and school celebrations, always cheering them on with the same enthusiasm and love that defined his life. He was not only known as Papaw to his family; but he was also Papaw to many others through his kindness and love.
