Patricia J. Newman

Patricia J. Newman, née Tietz, went home to be with the Lord on March 9, 2025.

Patty grew up in Indianapolis and attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and St Mary’s High School. After graduating, she worked at the State Capitol building until marrying her high school sweetheart, John “Jack” Newman, in 1962. While Jack was in the Air Force, she lived in Delaware and Cape Cod, Massachusetts, for several years before returning to Indianapolis to raise her family. Patty began working for Eli Lilly in 1966 until her retirement. She loved working most of her career at the Lilly Research Clinic and made many dear friends there.

Patty loved using her amazing organizational skills helping others and volunteered for years at St. Paul Hermitage after her retirement. She was also a long-time member of St. Barnabas Catholic Church, where she taught CCD for several years. Later, she was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church. She also enjoyed gardening, attending the symphony, and traveling both around the US with her husband and internationally with friends and family.

Patricia is predeceased by her husband, John T. Newman, her beloved son, Brian J. Newman, her parents, Alphonse A. Tietz and Mary (Patterson) Tietz, her sisters, Mary Frances Crampton and Carol Henderson, and her aunt, Wilma Patterson.

She is survived by her daughter, W. Catherine “Cate” Cavanagh (Paul), her brother, Anthony Tietz (Jane), her grandchildren Mikaela Cavanagh and Corinne Cavanagh, and many dear brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, and friends. She adored her family above all else, both given and chosen.

A Rosary will be prayed for Patty at 9 am on Friday, March 28. Visitation hours will be from 9:30 to 11:15 am on Friday, March 28. 1. To Cate and Family; Please accept our condolences and count on our prayers remembering your mother Pat.
(We were back yard neighbors for many years in Ridge Hill Trails)

  2. I was blessed to be a classmate with Patty throughout Sacred Heart Grade School, and then to work with her during her tenure at Eli Lilly and Company, as we were both employees of this organization. Throughout all the time that I knew Patty she was a wonderful human being, so well loved by all the Lilly people, and of course as an employee she was an outstanding contributor.

I will make a contribution in her name to the American Diabetes Association, and as I do so, could you send me the family address, so I can ask the American Diabetes Association to inform the family of the donation in Patty's name.
