George F. Mennel, Jr.

March 25, 1925 — July 13, 2019

George F. Mennel, Jr., 94, of Indianapolis passed away surrounded by his loving family on July 13, 2019. George was born on March 25, 1925 in Indianapolis to the late George F. and Marie C. (Gruner) Mennel. On June 7, 1947 he was united in marriage to Patricia A. (Chapman) Mennel who survives.

George was a graduate of Manual High School. Following graduation, George proudly served his country from 1943 to 1946 during World War II in the United States Coast Guard. Following his honorable discharge from the Coast Guard, George worked for Indianapolis Power and Light in Instrument Electrical Maintenance for 41 years. He was known to do other side work he could find in order to provide for his family.

A devout Catholic, George was an active member of St. Roch Catholic Church where he was involved for many years in the Men’s Club. George was a member of the Knights of Columbus Monsignor Downey Council #3660, he was a 4th Degree Knight in the Bishop Chatard Assembly. George was also a member of the Atkins Saw American Legion Post #355.

Along with his parents, George is preceded in death by a son, Edward J. Mennel; his siblings, Mary Jane Berger, Helen Lanahan, and Joseph Mennel.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Mennel of 72 years; daughters, Marsha G. (William) Brinson, Theresa A. (Kenneth) McClung, Madonna M. Petty, Pamela J. Lohman, Sandra K. (Harold) Jones; sons, George F. (Judy), III, William A. (Barbara), Donald A. (Kyle), Paul F. (Karen) Mennel; 25 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.

George’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Heart to Heart Hospice and the staff of the Five Star Residences of Banta Pointe for the excellent care they provided.

Family and friends will gather on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Daniel F. O’Riley Funeral Home, 6107 South East Street with recitation of the Rosary beginning at 7:30 P.M. Morning prayers will begin at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at the funeral home with the Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 A.M. at St. Roch Catholic Church, 3600 South Pennsylvania Street, Indianapolis. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Indianapolis. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Roch Catholic Church; envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
