James R. "Jim" Chase

James R. “Jim” Chase, 77, of Indianapolis, passed away at Community South Hospital on December 13, 2021 with his family by his side. He was born on July 17, 1944 in Kingsport, Tennessee to the late James Roy and Goldie Charlotte (Robbins) Chase. Jim graduated from George Washington High School in Indianapolis in the class of 1962. He then went on to graduate from Marian College, where he played on the basketball team. This is where he met Providence “Provi” Tantillo, a cheerleader for the college. The two wed in August of 1966 in St. Barnabas Catholic Church. Provi preceded her husband in death on September 2, 2021.

Jim and Provi were charter members of St. Barnabas Catholic Church, where he coached both boys’ and girls’ CYO basketball for many years. Truly passionate about the sport, Jim was also a dedicated Indiana University basketball fan. Jim enjoyed golfing and spending time with his family in The Villages, Florida. Jim was very social and enjoyed getting together with friends, especially on the weekends for dinner. A devoted grandpa, Jim never missed the opportunity to support his grandchildren at one of their school or sporting events. Jim’s outgoing personality, sense of humor, and encouraging presence will be dearly missed by those he leaves behind.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Michelle Schoettle; grandchildren, Kevin, Alyssa, Tyler, and Sam Schoettle; his brother, William “Bill” (Linda) Chase; a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Along with both of his parents and his wife of 55 years, Providence Chase,Jim was preceded in death by his daughter, Kim Chase and sisters, Barbara Sappenfield and Charlotte Crawford.

Jim’s Life Celebration® Visitation will be Tuesday, December 21, 2021, 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM, at the O’Riley Funeral Home, 6107 S. East Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46227. The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 2:00 PM in St. Barnabas Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
