Maria Ann (Sergi) Lorenzano

Maria “Mary” Ann (Sergi) Lorenzano, 93, lifelong Indianapolis resident, passed away January 9, 2022. Mrs. Lorenzano was the only daughter born to Italian immigrants, Giuseppe and Teresa (Zappia) Sergi. She was married to Antonio “Tony” John Lorenzano for 53 years before his death in 2003.

Maria graduated from St. Mary Academy and attended classes at Indiana Central College. She was a strong proponent of education and even recently took classes to brush up on her beloved Italian language. She worked for Superior Coffee, Indiana Bell, Wm. H. Block Company and for Lazarus over the years. She was a devout Catholic and was actively involved at St. Bernadette, and more recently attended Holy Name. She was a member of the Cathedral High School Mothers’ Club, the Italian American Club, and a recipient of the St. John Bosco Award through the CYO.

Maria was an incredible wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend whose unconditional love will always remain with her family. She was the matriarch of many generations, including 8 children, 16 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. She never met a stranger and embraced all as family. She enjoyed traveling—especially to Italy, reading, and watching sports, and she was always there to cheer on her sons at Christian Park Little League through the years. She was a true Nonna or Nonni, an Italian grandmother, with a gift for making some of the finest lasagna, gnocchi, and meatballs. Maria was a loving caregiver to her husband, parents, and her in-laws in their later years. She celebrated life to fullest and will always be remembered for her grace, beauty, courageous spirit, and unconditional love for everyone.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Private John J. Lorenzano I.F.D.; brothers, Dominic (Betty), Anthony Paul, Francis (Claris), Rocco (Laverne), Joseph Thomas, and Michael Sergi (Diana).

Survivors include her children, Anthony Paul (Lynn), Mark Albert (Martha), Michael Nunzio (Karen), Vincent Mario (Jan), Victor Leopold (Deborah) Lorenzano, Angela (Victor) Lorenzano Kiplinger, Nancy Lorenzano (Jim); grandchildren, Angela (Bryan), Leslie (Garad), Joseph (Megan), Maria (James), Lisa (Shawn), Diana (Tyler), Johnna (David), Michael (Danielle), Dominic (Shannon), Natalie (Luke), Kristen, Nicholas (Emily), Annie (Thomas), Elizabeth, John and Anna (Clark); sisters-in-law, Roseanne Sergi and Mary Ann Amore; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

  1. My grandmother was just the most beautiful soul and a true angel on earth. So giving and loving with the warmest heart and hug. 3. Aunt Mary you sure will be missed. I’m so honored to have known you for thirty four years. All the memories. Going to the fair, going out to eat, or just sitting around the table at mom and dad’s house eating all of that great Italian food. I will hold these memories forever in my heart. You were a “fighter and a survivor”. Until we meet again…… A bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.

  4. Such a Beautiful Lady! I remember when you moved out of the big house. You gave me 2 beautiful glasses and told me to always remember you! I have them in my China cabinet with the Christmas Tree Pin John gave me in elementary school. I am sure he had that big grin on his face when you entered Heaven! Rest in Peace.

  5. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Losing your mom is a hard thing. Hang on to the happy memories…those will get you though this rough time. Blessed are those who morn for they shall be comforted. Wayne Jeffries

  6. One of the sweetest ladies God put on this earth. Her smile and laugh lite up a room. St. Bernadette was fortunate to have Mary always in the kitchen cooking, laughing, and greeting everyone who came to visit. Angie and I attended grade school and high school together, so very sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. My brother Tom spent many a Friday night in the Lorenzano kitchen playing poker. What a wonderful family who I had the pleasure to grow up around. I pass the Lorenzano house over on Worchester every morning and will continue to say a prayer and remember that beautiful smile that belonged to one beautiful lady. God bless you all.

  10. We were saddened to hear of Mrs. Lorenzano’s passing. One of the last of our greatest generation. There are so many memories that come to mind. Growing up and are parents getting together. Sitting at our kitchen table and her telling us girls about her new diet. She chews up her food to get the taste and then spits it out before she swallows it! My sister Diane got a big kick out of that trick! When Mark took me to a dance freshman year and on the way home she got a flat tire! No cell phones in those days and my Dad was really upset we were late getting home! She got an earful from him for not calling him to let her know we would be late! So many lunches in our parents later years where Charlene would take them out for lunch (along with Betty) and playing cards after lunch! Now they are all in heaven, relaxing, eating pasta and playing cards! What great memories and life they gave us! RIP. Steve and Gina (Sgro) Horton

  13. What a beautiful person, Mary! I am so sorry to hear of her passing. She was so kind and loving. She never cared how many kids came to play or minded the noise. She attended St. Mary’s with my mom. I’m sure she and my mom are helping God with the children.❤️❤️

  14. I’m so sorry to hear of Mrs Lorenzano’s passing. I sometimes see her when I used to visit my grandparents, The Archers, on Emerson Ave. She was always super friendly and welcoming. I hadn’t seen her in about 30 years – since I was a teenager- but I still remember her.

( Lord bless you and keep you boath now and now and forever) Don Worthington

  18. Lived a great life. Reminds me of my mom, Anne Zappa, when I saw her photo. There’s nothing better in the world than a great Italian family.

  19. Aunt Mary is my godmother. Even though I grew up in Florida, she was there for my biggest moments! She held me in her arms as I was baptized . She came to Florida for my wedding . Shortly after I had my son, she came again. And years later, she came when my dad passed away. For a godmother in Indianapolis, that’s pretty impressive! The last time we talked on the phone she shared her wisdom: “life is a journey, and we do the best we can”. We talked about my mom and dad, and she told me to remember ” love never ends”. A beautiful thought. As always, we ended our conversation with a lot of laughter! Wonderful memories!

  20. My family sends condolences to the Lorenzano family during this time. I knew Mary Lorenzano because I knew her family. As a youngster, I played over at the Lorenzano compound during many summer days and nights. Mary was a wonderful mother, wife and human being. She always treated me wonderfully. We will miss you, Mary but now heaven has an extra angel there and she’s looking down on us. RIP, Mary. We love you always and you’ll always be in our hearts.
