Samuel J. Martin, 86, Greenwood, passed away peacefully March 20, 2020, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born October 12, 1933, in Tiffin, Ohio, to the late Samuel and Ruth Martin.
Mr. Martin graduated from Bowling Green State University, earned his Master’s Degree from Indiana University, and also proudly served in the United States Army. A long time business executive with various companies, he retired in 1988 as the President of Freedom Phone at Southwestern Bell. A published author, he wrote six books about the Civil War. Even more treasured are the letters that he wrote about life lessons on a monthly basis for his daughters and granddaughters through the years. He was a member of Our Lady of the Greenwood Catholic Church. Sam enjoyed travel, golf, and more recently playing bridge with his friends at the Social of Greenwood. Mr. Martin was a wonderful story teller and will be remembered for a delightful sense of humor.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Katherine Frances Martin.
Survivors include his daughters, Kathy (Jim) McMurray, Julie Hamilton, Ann (Paul) Martin-Myers, and Lisa (Kevin) Kosanke; significant other, Audrey Miller; grandchildren, Kristin (Brian Styczynski) McMurray, Megan (Mike) Hautamaki, Sarah (Michael) Shulman, Kaitlin (Cameron) Swartz, and Lauren (Cameron) Bevington; great grandchildren, Wyatt Shulman, Ryan Hautamaki, Mabel Styczynski, and Jack Bevington.
A private graveside service will be held on Wednesday, March 25, 2020, at Crown Hill Cemetery. A Memorial Mass and Celebration of Sam’s life will be announced later.
