William Stephen “Bill” Dewell, 77, of Indianapolis and previously, Lowell, Indiana, passed away on September 29, 2022, at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis after a courageous battle with cancer. Bill was born on June 30, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois to the late Charles “Bud” and Justine (Brown) Dewell.
Bill was a 1964 graduate of Griffith High School where he played as a half-back on the school’s only undefeated football team. Following his graduation, he attended Indiana University Northwest. Bill proudly served his country in the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany; Bill was honorably discharged in 1968. On May 24, 1969, Bill wed Sharon E. Stumpf in Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Highland, Indiana. This union produced five sons.
Bill retired as an outside sales representative at Marco Supply in East Chicago, Illinois. Prior to that, he worked for Hammond Valve Corporation. Bill was a devoted member of St. Edward Catholic Church in Lowell for 39 years where he was active as a CYO basketball coach, fundraising for the parish, and working in the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry with his wife. Upon moving to Indianapolis, Bill and Sharon became members of Nativity Catholic Church.
Cheering on the Chicago Bears, Bulls, and White Sox, working in his garden, camping and traveling, spending time with his family, and working on his 100-year-old home in Lowell were things Bill enjoyed. He will be remembered as an extremely selfless man who will be greatly missed by his family.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin sons, Christopher William and Brian Stephen Dewell; siblings, Jerrylynn (Floyd) Schmidt and Larry (Barbara) Dewell; and in-laws, George and Lillian Stumpf.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Sharon E. Dewell; children, Thomas W. Dewell, Randal A. (Kris) Dewell, Ryan J. Dewell, Brandon S. (Dr. Kelli) Dewell, and Darren M. Dewell; grandchildren, Cole, Justin, Nathan, Liam, Van, Jack, Johnathon, Emerson, Finley, and Raylen; brother-in-law, Joseph (Cathy) Stumpf; daughter-in-law, Gina Dewell; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
