Born in: Monticello, Kentucky
Resided in: Indianapolis, Indiana

James M. Guffey, 84, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on July 4, 2026. He was born on May 12, 1942, in Monticello, Kentucky, to the late Carl and Zula Guffey.

James dedicated more than 40 years of service to Ford Motor Company, where he built a respected career and made many lasting friendships.

Family was always important to James. In his younger years, he spent many weekends traveling with his family to visit relatives in Monticello, Kentucky, and throughout Indiana. He enjoyed staying connected with family and valued the time spent together.

Later in life, one of the things James enjoyed most was spending time with his children and grandchildren. He always looked forward to their visits and enjoyed catching up, sharing stories, and simply being together. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures.

He could often be found sitting on his porch or at the picnic table, enjoying the day and visiting with neighbors and friends who stopped by. James never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need whenever he could and never expected anything in return.

James was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Barbara Guffey; his parents, Carl and Zula Guffey; and his sisters, Wilma Hampton and Wanda Garner.

He is survived by his children, Patricia Guffey, Melinda (Edgar) Campbell, Michael Guffey, and Angie (Jason Spencer) Guffey; his grandchildren, Erin, Evan, Nate, Gray, Chelsie, Tyler, Lexi, and Hailee; his siblings, Clifford Guffey, Virginia Wigginton, and Barbara Glover; and many extended family members and friends.

James will be remembered for his bright blue eyes, his practical outlook on life, and the time he shared with family and friends. From weekends spent visiting loved ones to conversations on the porch, those memories will be cherished by all who knew him.

A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, July 24, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. at New Crown Cemetery,  2101 Churchman Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46203. Following the graveside service, family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Fireplace Room at the Indianapolis World Sports Park, located at 1313 S Post Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46239.

  4. My Uncle James, I loved him so much. He & I always talked alot, but these last few years we had began talking more for longer periods of time on the phone, going more in depth into our families history. We figured a few things out together & made some sense of some things. I learned his & Aunt Barb’s phone number when I was 5 by Momma (Wanda) & to this day have never forgot it, it was my backup emergency number if I couldn’t get a hold of her. I will love them for eternity. LOVE, that’s the difference, true LOVE.

  5. I don’t think he ever met a stranger. I loved him so. I so wish I could be there, we are all really going to miss him very very much. There no one else like him. He one of a KIND.
