He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in the class of 1952 with his late wife, JoAnn (Miller) Herbertz, who preceded him in death on January 30, 2020. Shortly after high school, the two were wed on September 12, 1953, in Holy Name Catholic Church.

Later in life, JoAnn and Shavey became active members of St. Barnabas Catholic Church where Shavey continued to serve as a lector.

A hardworker to provide for his family, Shavey worked at Indiana Bell as a systems analyst for a number of years, retiring on February 28, 1991. Shavey enjoyed being with his wife and family, playing a good card game, camping, especially in Indiana State Parks, and attending various sporting and school events for their cherished grandchildren. Shavey will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather who was devoted to his family.

Along with his wife of 66 years, JoAnn, Shavey was preceded in death by his brothers, Donald, Joseph, and Jerome Herbertz, and an infant sister, Elizabeth Herbertz.

Guestbook

  1. Mary Kay—-I haven’t seen you in quite a while but I do remember meeting your dad a time or two when we were at Saint Joe’s. So sorry to hear about his passing. My dad passed 3 years ago. This past Dec. 11th would have been his 100th birthday. All the Tay-Jeans siblings got together that day to celebrate it. I hope all your siblings are together and healthy like all of we TayJeans although two died last year from cancer. I’m not sure where you live now but I hope you have a great 2022. Condolences—from Denise DesJean-Hunter

  2. Please accept our most heartfelt sympathies for your lossour thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.

  3. Mary Kay, It has been a long time since I have seen you. I remember when years ago we were confused by each other at the CYO organization. Although I did not feel we really looked alike, I felt it a compliment when they thought I was you. I hope you are doing well and know that your family are in our prayers. Ann & Art Berkemeier

  4. Was talking with mom today and she said that most of their “club” and spouses were gone now They all understood the value of friendship. Mom said your dad was always teasing the nuns, sounds right doesn’t it. She said in first grade they could not eat until after church and your dad would always spread a napkin on his desk and bring 2 milks and doughnuts. She always had an egg sandwich so they would divid it in half, the start of their long friendship. What I always remember about your dad is his big smile and wonderful laugh. You are all in our prayers

  5. Mary Kay and Mark, Nancy and I extend our sympathy to you and your family. I enjoyed talking and visiting with your dad at Indiana Bell while we worked there together. He would always provide updates on how you were doing. Hope you are both in good health. May he Rest In Peace. Nancy and Dan Krodel, SJC 1976

  6. I remember working with Al back in the 70s at Indiana Bell. We moved out of state for 17 years. I reconnected with him briefly when I met him at Home Depot on SR 135. Nice guy – always enjoyed talking to him. Condolences to the family. RIH. Russ Courtney

  7. On behalf of the Cahill Clan I want to extend our deepest sympathies to the Herbertz Family on the loss of their loving dad. Our mom and dad were Sacred Heart Central classmates and lifelong friends of Al and JoAnn. Years later our families grew up together as Holy Name Giants in Beech Grove. We all have fond memories of the love, fun, and good times shared. Our parents always spoke fondly of Al, JoAnn and the Miller-Herbertz Families. I’m not sure where he got the nickname Shavey but it could have been his warm friendly smile. Here’s a good throwback picture I got from mom and dad. Al wore #35 in 1948. Our dad Jerry wore #31 his brother Jimmy #48. What a beautiful life he lived. We are so very sorry for your loss. Ed Cahill
