Bernhard Irmer

November 22, 1935 ~ September 3, 2018
Born in Germany on November 22, 1935, Bernhard (Bernie) Irmer loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend passed away Monday, September 3, 2018 after a brave battle with cancer.
During this time his faith never wavered, and he was always more concerned about the wellbeing of those around him than of himself. He fought courageously, never complained, and never questioned. Ironically, Bernie passed away on Labor Day which exemplifies his strong work ethic and tireless efforts to take care of his family.
Bernie was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church. He served in the German Air Force and was also was an owner and operator in the construction and leasing industries for nearly 50 years.
On December 2, 1961 Bernhard was united in marriage to his wife Ilona (Balazs) Irmer; she preceded him in death.
Bernhard is survived by his daughter, Cindy (Keith) Bell; Sons Rick and Mike (Heather) Irmer; six grandchildren, Jessica, Lillian, Jacob, Madeline, Hannah, and Grace; and 5 surviving siblings residing in Germany.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Bernie’s wonderful caregivers at Choosing Home; Jen, Taylor, Kelsie, and Maggie. These fine women provided such dedicated, compassionate, and loving care that he came to consider them a part of the family.
Family and friends may gather from 4:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. on Thursday, September 6, 2018 in the Daniel F. O’Riley Funeral Home, 6107 South East Street, Indianapolis. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 7, 2018 at 11:00a.m. at St. Jude Catholic Church, 5353 McFarland Road, Indianapolis, where additional calling hours will be observed from 10:00a.m. until the time of mass. Bernie, was one of my most admired men I have ever known. He came here from Germany with $77.00 in his pocket could not speak a word of English he knew coffee and hamburger. He did not know a soul. I loved listening to all of his stories of his life. He worked very very hard and became quite successful. He was always ready to help anyone that needed his help. He was one of the finest craftsman I have known. He could look at anything in a magazine and build it. He made beautiful furniture for his family and friends. He became close to all of my family and they all loved him. You will be missed my special friend.
My grandpa was not only the hardest working man I’ve ever known, but he was also the most kind-hearted. We had complete opposite views when it came to almost anything… especially politics. However, I could sit and debate with my grandpa all day and night & no matter how much he disagreed with me, he would always support my viewpoint. I wish to someday have such a positive outlook on life, slow to anger personality, & open heart as my Bernie did. There is not a thing I wouldn’t do to watch golf and share a conversation with my grandpa again. The most beautiful soul I’ve been so blessed to love.
You are in our prayers! The Tully Family
