Charles D. Paul

Charles D. Paul

May 2, 1952 – June 13, 2018

On June 13, 2018 our beloved husband, father, Papa, uncle, brother and friend went to heaven to meet his savior, Jesus Christ. Charlie loved life and made this world a better place. Charlie served his hometown, the southside of Indianapolis, as a dentist and an active member and volunteer of Saint Barnabas Parish. Charlie was born on May 2, 1952 to Eugene and Ruby Paul who preceded him in death. Charlie loved growing up in Columbus, Indiana with his siblings Peggy Paul Baker and William Paul. Every summer Charlie enjoyed making memories with his family at Grandview Lake, visiting the log cabin he built with his college friends. Charlie’s glory days began at Indiana University, where he enjoyed being a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, cheering for IU basketball, and graduating from the Indiana University School of Dentistry—which is when he met his soul mate and wife of 41 years, Diana Hawkins Paul. Charlie’s dental practice, patients, and staff saw his kind heart in action every day. He worked over 30 years as a Dentist, and had an immense amount of gratitude for his office staff, which he cared for like family. Charlie was loved by Diane’s family, and was preceded in death by his in-laws Gene & Dee Hawkins. No one loved Charlie more than Diane, their 3 children, and their 5 grandchildren. Charlie’s legacy will live on through his wife and their children: Lori and Chip Taylor (Joe & Mac), Kelly and Matt Williams (Annie, Jimmy & Chaz), and Joe Paul and Kristen Wright. No one brought Charlie greater joy than his grandchildren: Joe, Mac, Annie, Jimmy, and Chaz. The family thanks Monsignor Tony Volz, Father Tim Wyciskalla, and their Saint Barnabas Parish for the support and care during this sudden and unexpected loss. Memorial donations can be made to Saint Barnabas Athletic Department, where Charlie coached his children for years and enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of Charlie Paul from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 in the Daniel F. O’Riley Funeral Home, 6107 S. East Street (U.S. Hwy. 31 S.), Indianapolis. Morning prayers will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at the funeral home followed by 11:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Barnabas Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visit www.OrileyFuneralHome.com where you may express online condolences to the Paul family.

  1. I always loved Charlie Paul. Starting from back in the IU days when he and his buds and/or Sig Ep frat brothers would come to all the college events and such…and then he/they came with us onward into our “adult” years (some say we never grew up, however). Our band, “Pure Funk” did the gigs…but, Charlie Paul rocked the party! Charlie Paul was “The Party!” He was quite the character. Quite an entertainer himself. What a good fellow and great friend! Big blessings to and on the blessing that is and was Charlie Paul. And, heavy condolences from here…….Asher Benrubi

May God give you all the strength you need at this time.

  33. The day I met Charlie Paul was the best day of my life. I worked for Charlie 23 years. He always said he was the blessed one but I am the blessed one. He has taught me so much and there was a Standing joke that I knew as much as him. Dubbed the name Dr. Denise. He was so smart and so caring of all his patients. He was certainly smarter than me. Life as I know it will never be the same but better for it. I will miss him sitting across from me telling stories about racing, his family and I.U. of course he still hired me even though I was a Purdue fan lol RIP Charlie. 37. So very sad to hear of Dr. Pauls passing…..our family went to his practice for 36 years years and recently my 3 year old granddaughter went as well….what a wonderful dentist and what a wonderful office staff….always was more like visiting friends instead of a routine dentist visit

  38. Our family is heartbroken over the loss of this wonderful man. Our family’s have known each other for 25 years…first as a Dentist…and then as Kelly’s Dad. Kelly and our daughter, Megan went to the same dance studio of many years. Couldn’t even begin to count the number of recitals and performances I’ve seen Charlie attend…always so supportive of his children’s efforts. As a Dentist, he had no equal…as far as our family was concerned. Charlie and every member of his staff have been so kind and supportive of our family over these many years. I can say…with all honesty…that I really enjoyed visiting my Dentist. Over the years we have had some of the liveliest conversations imaginable. I will so miss his laugh and his dry sense of humor. Diane, Kelly, Lori and Joe…lifting you in prayer.

  39. My heart is heavy from hearing of Dr. Paul’s passing. He was my and my son’s dentist for many years. He always greeted you with a smile and took time to see how you and yours were doing. Great man and a great Dentist. I am lifting his family and friends up in my prayers.

  40. Gary Schinbeckler
Charley was the quintessential good dude. Everything you could ask for in a man and friend

  41. How many can call their dentist by their first name and he remember your family. Charlie was the best. You could always tell that his staff was important to him. I’m still shocked by the news and saddened. To the Paul family, I’m so very sorry for your tremendous loss. You all are in my thoughts and prayers

  42. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you Diane, Lori, Kelly, Joe, family and Dr Paul’s dental family. Many lives have been touched by a kind, compassionate and friendly man. Many members of our immediate family and some of our distant family have been patients for approximately 30 years. His dental office did not consist of employees but dental family. We observed the dental family appreciated and enjoyed their relationship and friendship with Charlie. Charlie was polite, considerate and respectful. I noticed that after having any procedure performed he would say “good job” and thank the person assisting or completing the procedure. Charlie will definitely be missed but fondly remembered.

  64. We are so saddened to hear of Charlie’s passing. He was always a a genuine gentleman and will be missed by many. The video is a wonderful tribute to his memory.

  65. When we moved back to Indianapolis, my mother asked around for the name of a good dentist. She received the recommendation for a Dr. Miller, who we saw couple different times until he got sick and he brought on a partner fresh from dental school, Dr. Charles Paul. And so began a 40+ year relationship that went far beyond my mouth, The Indy 500, the Hoosiers, shenanigans of various politicians always came up. He always asked how my brother and sister were doing even though they stopped going to him. We started texting each other on race day to wish each other a good day, and occasionally share a good fish story. I always wanted to get to know him better and would been very easy to do because of his kind, friendly demeanor. I guess someone in heaven must have needed their bridge fixed- cause they are getting the best and only dentist I have ever had. You are very sorely missed, but know your home now. Godspeed Dr. Paul.

  104. My husband Rick and I have been patients of Dr. Paul for many years. We were refereed to him when we were looking for a “good” dentist. Over the years we have come to know him as a Great Dentist; but even more so; a gentle, kind, compassionate man who truly cares. Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to his family, staff and other beloved patients. He will be greatly missed!

  105. I’ve been a patient in Dr Paul’s office since the mid 80s , I began with Dr Miller, Dr Paul cared for all of my children, after Dr Millers death I had the privilege of seeing Dr Paul , he was a great dentist and a wonderful man, always enjoyed talking with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and staff during this sad time. He will be greatly missed. Sandi Wamsley

  111. Dr. Paul was a friend and worked on my entire family. He came in when I got hit in the mouth with a baseball – I had braces at the time and he made the comment when they were performing surgery (Shinbeckler, Hickman and Dr. Paul), “Well, you’re going to get these braces off in record time” Condolences to the family. I’m terribly sorry for your loss, we could use more like him.

  126. I just learned of Dr. Paul’s passing when I received the letter sent to his patients (I have gone there since before he joined Dr. Miller). The look of joy on his face in this picture embodies the personality I saw every time I had a dental visit. It is with both sadness at your loss and gladness for his faith that I send my deepest empathy to all of you. My husband died suddenly and unexpectedly just 19 months ago so I can truly understand the mix of feelings; loss of physical presence but belief that he is enjoying all that we are promised in our eternal home where there is unfathomable love and peace. May you all feel God’s many blessings of peace and memory during this time of adjustment. Much love and hugs.

  127. Oh Sharon, thank you so much for your heartfelt message. My dad loved his office, patients and staff so much! This picture was taken of him during a work day, pure happiness. He was such a wonderful man, he truly enjoyed each day on earth, and knew the eternal resting place is with Jesus in paradise. His deep faith in God is what is helping all of us during this time, in turn making our faith grow stronger. Thank you for being a part of his life and continuing to be in ours
