Cyril W. "Cy" DesJean

Cyril W. “Cy” DesJean, 96, of Indianapolis, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Indianapolis on December 11, 1921, Cy was the son of the late Cyril S. and Mary C. (Kipley) DesJean.

Cy attended high school at St. Meinrad Seminary for three years and was a 1939 graduate of Cathedral High School in Indianapolis. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, he was honorably discharged in 1945. He was united in marriage to Patricia L. Byfield, their marriage in 1946 produced seven children, Phillip W. (Susan), Thomas P. (Vicki), John A. (Cindy), Mark E. and Matthew F. (Julie) DesJean, Colette M. (John) Tellmann, and Denise M. (Michael) Hunter. In 1971, three years after Patricia passed away, he was united in marriage to Elsie Jean (Bell) Taylor, and their merged family of children increased to 13. Elsie’s children include, Stephen J. (Janet), Lawrence R. (Janet), Philip W. (Theresa), Jeffrey D. (Carol), and Robert J. Taylor, and Jeanne M. (Vernon) Goedde; Elsie’s son, Robert J. Taylor preceded him in death. Cy is also survived by his sister, Joan Laurent of Decatur, Indiana, 29 grandchildren, and 42 great grandchildren.

His brother, Richard DesJean and his sister, Florence “Dolly” Diette also preceded him in death.

After 45 years, Cy retired from N.A.P.A. BalKamp, Inc. as a catalog manager. He was a devoted member of St. Mark Catholic Church since 1953 and the Knights of Columbus #3660-Monsignor Downey Council.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of Cyril W. DesJean from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at the Daniel F. O’Riley Funeral Home, 6107 S. East Street (U.S. Hwy. 31 S.), Indianapolis. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Morning prayers will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, June 8, 2018 at the funeral home, followed by 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mark Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making memorial donations to St. Labre’ Indian School or St. Mark Catholic School. We will always have a special place in our hearts for Cy and Elsie as we shared wedding days with them on April 17, 1971. How special and kind it was for them to send us a telegram, of all things, on our wedding day wishing us a long and happy marriage that was delivered to us at our reception. We looked forward to exchanging anniversary cards over the years and always considered their marriage as a special blessing to ours.
