Earl William Huffman 93, of Indianapolis was born on February 19, 1933, in the small town of Colfax, Indiana, to the late Clarence & Mildred Huffman, a place whose close-knit warmth greatly influenced the man he became. Earl passed away peacefully in Indianapolis, leaving behind a mosaic of love, dedication, and cherished memories.
Those who had the privilege to know Earl soon realized that his quiet strength shaped each day in ways both profound and gentle. A humble man by nature, Earl embraced a life found in gratitude and service. From a young age, he learned to appreciate each moment, a perspective he carried with him in all circumstances, always mindful and thankful for what he had.
Earl’s service to his country was a source of quiet pride. As a United States Air Force Veteran, he served with dignity in Korea, holding steadfast to his values of duty and compassion. His military experience only deepened his resolve to lead a life of kindness and generosity to others—a thread that would remain a constant for the rest of his days.
For over 39 years, Earl devoted his professional life to the railroad, serving as a Yard Clerk with Conrail. There, he became a familiar presence, known for his unwavering work ethic and for fostering genuine, lifelong friendships. Even after retiring from this long and esteemed career, Earl’s gentle restlessness could not be quieted. He soon found himself working for Hubler Automotive as a car transporter, proving that his vigor and desire to be of service knew no bounds.
Beyond his professional and military endeavors, Earl’s life was marked by devotion to community and faith. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus—particularly Msgr. Downey Council—as well as the American Legion #252 in Greenwood, Indiana. His Catholic faith shone brightly through his countless charitable contributions, always given freely and with a generous heart.
Sports brought Earl immense delight; basketball was a lifelong passion, and supporting all Indiana teams—especially Purdue—was a source of ongoing joy. Earl invested this love into his community, coaching CYO basketball in his younger years, where he mentored and inspired many. Those experiences were as dear to him as any accolade, allowing him to connect with young people and share the joy of the game.
Yet, above all these accomplishments, it was family that gave Earl his greatest happiness. He treasured moments when all his loved ones were gathered under one roof, relishing the laughter and companionship that filled the room. Time spent with his grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and his devotion to family laid a legacy of togetherness and unconditional love.
Earl will be remembered as a man who made life better simply by being present—quiet, humble, ever grateful, and always willing to lend a helping hand. His absence will be felt deeply by those whose lives were touched by his kindness and steadiness.
Earl is survived by his loving wife; Carol Jean Huffman, loving daughter; Earla Jon) Imel, grandchildren; Amanda Imel, and Glenn Adler Huffman Jr., great-granddaughter; Dylann, along with sister; Carol Jean Anderson.
Earl is preceded in death by his son; Glenn Huffman, daughter; Kimberly Huffman, grandson; Thomas Imel, and sister; Geraldine Huffman.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2026 at O’Riley-Branson Funeral Service & Crematory (6107 S. East St., Indianapolis, Indiana 46227) from 5:00pm-7:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, August 14, 2026 at St. Mark Catholic Church (535 E. Edgewood Ave., Indianapolis, Indiana 46227) at 10:00am. Burial will take place at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Greenwood, Indiana.
