Floyd Atkins

Floyd Atkins, 79, Martinsville, passed away October 20, 2020. Mr. Atkins was born May 3, 1941, in Birdseye, Indiana, to the late Samuel and Lula (Spraggins) Atkins. He married Janet (Speedy) Atkins on June 25, 1960, and she survives.
Floyd relocated to Smith Valley in 1965 and bought his first bulldozer in 1970. He was the owner and operator of Atkins Excavating since 1970, and was still on the jobsite up until three weeks ago. Floyd was a member, usher, and trustee at Smith Valley United Methodist Church. He enjoyed the outdoors – fishing, deer hunting, and was an animal lover. He will be fondly remembered by his loving family and many friends.
In addition to his parents, Floyd was preceded in death by siblings, Doris Earlene Merkley, Sally Frances Kempf, Jesse Stillman Atkins, and Stanley Ray Atkins.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Janet; children, Carol Jean (Rick) Bechman and Steve (Susan) Atkins; four grandchildren, Stephanie (Richard) Schroder, Josh Bechman, Jeff Bechman, and Jessica (Jacob) Fink; one great grandchild, Blakely Schroder.
Friends and family will gather Friday, October 23, 2020, 5 to 8 p.m., at the O’Riley Funeral Home, 6107 S. East Street, Indianapolis. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 24, 2020, in the Smith Valley United Methodist Church, 5293 Old Smith Valley Road, Greenwood. Pastors Jennifer Lewis and William Merkley will officiate. Burial will follow at the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery, Waverly. Memorial contributions may be made to the church. My prayers to Floyd’s family & friends! He was a character & I loved talking with him & Jan. Donnie Sims and I enjoyed going down to Madison IN and spending time at their cabin while we worked at the Regatta! They were kind enough to let us stay there & we very much appreciated it. I’m sure Donnie & Floyd are having a great conversation in heaven! Miss you both!! My condolences to his family! ߙϰߒš Becky Shirey

I’m sorry to see Floyd pass! We will miss seeing him at Neathery’s BP. He has been a part of my life for over 20 years as a customer and friend. I always joked with him that I’d like to be his adopted son. Rest in peace Floyd. All the best Dave & Lynn Neathery
