He was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of nearly 64 years, Shirley Wendling Carroll and his brother, Thomas P. Carroll, Jr.
Jack graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1949 and was a three-sport letterman in football, basketball, and baseball. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War where he also played basketball, baseball, and volleyball with his fellow serviceman. Jack worked nearly 40 years in the production of the Indianapolis Star and News. He was active in sports and coached CYO basketball, and Indiana Central Little League baseball. Jack was a member at St. Barnabas Catholic Church for over 50 years where he served as an usher and helped count the Sunday collections. He loved to play Pinochle, Euchre, Aggravation, and loved to spend time with his family especially on vacation in Florida. While Jack loved all of his many activities, the greatest love he had was for his family. Jack was a great husband, father and grandfather, a consummate volunteer and an all-around great guy.

I loved your mom and dad. As next door neighbors, they were so kind to my parents throughout the years. They played many hard fought games of aggravation and they were always there for each other through good times and bad. When I was in grade school, Jack taught me how to block out and play defense on their basketball court. Jack was quite the ball player. The Squillace family will never forget Jack and Shirley. We were blessed to have them in our lives. Love, Mike Squillace
His steadfast attendance at 5pm Saturday mass to hear his favorite guitar and piano group was an example of his devotion to his family!
Please accept our most heartfelt sympathies for your loss… Our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.
Many fond memories of he Carroll family. Dad’s first cousins. Aunt Mary ( mother of Jack) would tell us we would get a Jack Carroll special if we didn’t behave. Never got one, but it’s a legend!
I am so sorry to hear this news, although I have no doubt that he is now an angel among us. Jack was a dear friend of my fathers (Carl “Louie” Brown) and was my Godfather. I absolutely loved him! I still cherish the memories of his Christmas Eve visits and was so proud when I was old enough to save money so that I could give him “my very own” gift. He and your mom were two of the nicest people I’ve ever known, always kind and always smiling. I have committed to babysit my grand daughter out of state this week and regrettably will not be able to attend the mass. Please know my thoughts are with you and I will always treasure the wonderful memories of both of your parents.
Lisa and Family – sending our deepest condolences! Keeping all of you in our prayers. Love, Becca Hammel & Jenn Petty
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Let us know if we can do anything.
Lisa, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Thinking of you during this difficult time.
During my childhood the Carroll’s and Bruhn’s always celebrated holidays and birthdays at each others houses. I remember one year, uncle Jack got a bunch of tickets and took several of us downtown to a basketball game at Market Square Arena. During one of the time-outs they called out a seat number over the PA and it was Greg’s seat. I think he won a transistor radio or something like that.
I enjoyed reading some of these other posts, Marnita Louzon referencing Jack as being her Godfather, he was my Godfather as well. Or Mike Squillace referencing Jack teaching him out to block out on basketball. I remember uncle Jack teaching me the techniques of how to throw a curve and knuckle ball. Great Memories!
Thinking of you and your family my dear friend Lisa. Love you, Tracy
Our sympathies from the Butler DMS and DMS Bridge Programs.
Wishing you peace and comfort
