Patricia Mayer

Patricia Norris Mayer (Pat) completed her journey here on earth on August 26th. She was born to James and Margaret Lentz Norris on 12/29/1926 in Danville IL.

Pat was a strong independent woman. She graduated from Marian College with a chemistry degree in 1949. She taught high school chemistry. She married Ray Mayer, the love of her life, on 2/4/1950. They enjoyed 60 years of life together and had eight children. In 1969 she went back to teaching this time third grade at St. Roch. After 11 years she became the Director of Religious Education. At 60 she graduated from St. Mary of the Woods with a masters in pastoral theology. She then moved into the position of Pastoral Associate for St. Roch until her retirement in 2000. Pat was devoted to her God her family and the parishioners at St. Roch.

Pat perfected her skill of cooking after she was married. She loved cooking for crowds and with eight children she knew how to substitute and stretch a meal. She was known for her pies at the St. Roch festival sweet booth which she ran for years. She and Ray also liked to garden and Pat canned, froze vegetables and made jelly. After much cajoling Ray convinced her to try camping. She loved it! They purchased a pop up camper and were off. They camped with their family all over the US. When their children were grown, the camping expeditions continued with their grandchildren. After her grandson’s wedding in Mexico, Pat saw that international travel wasn’t that hard. So, at 80 she and Ray went to Europe for the first time. Seeing the pope was a highlight. She loved life and all the beauty of God’s creation. She shared that love and thirst for learning with her children and grandchildren.

Pat was preceded in death by her husband Ray Mayer, son Stephen Mayer and brother, Tom Norris. She is survived by her children, Kathy (Larry) Delpha of Greenwood, IN, Richard (Donielle) Mayer of College Station TX, Margaret Mayer (Gary Ogland) of Ocalla FL, Ann Marie Mayer of Anchorage AK, Mary Lou Mayer of Greenwood, IN, Paul Mayer of Indianapolis, IN and Patty (Rex) Ralston of Bargersville, IN. She also leaves behind 18 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She resided in the home of her daughter Patty. We would like to thank her excellent additional caregivers Daisy Musanonda and Brenda Mutwle who assisted Patty with her care. She will be sorely missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Pat’s name to St. Roch Catholic Church or St. Vincent de Paul. A family celebration of life is being planned and services will be private. Services entrusted to O’Riley Funeral Home Indianapolis, IN. www.orileyfuneralhome.com

Guestbook

  1. Pat was a great mentor to many! I am thankful our paths were joined on this journey we call life! Keeping all of you left behind close in prayer! Nancy Timpe

  2. Thinking of her family, her love for her children and grandchildren, and her smile that welcomed friends. She passed on a wonderful legacy of how to enjoy life and be of service to God and neighbor.

  3. My mom, Rita Able, loved Pat and enjoyed working with her at St. Roch. They spent many hours together on many programs and projects. We are so sorry for your loss.

  4. What a sweetheart! All in the Hillan family were touched by Pat in some way, and came away better for the experience. I’ll always remember meeting Pat at the meat counter at Buck’s one day in 1973, a year when things were tight financially, especially for large families. I mentioned that I missed being able to buy cookies. I said I really wished for a sugar cookie. Later that afternoon some of you showed up at our home with a huge box of homemade sugar cookies! She had a family to feed also, but she thought of us too. I know she has a very high place in heaven with Ray and her son. God bless all of you today…just as he did in giving you this awesome mother.

  5. Rest in peace, Pat. You were God’s faithful and humble servant. You were truly a saint walking among us. Thanks for all you did for us at St. Roch Parish and School! God bless you and all your family…..Bonnie Schott

  6. Heaven has another angel! I have many childhood memories of Pat at St Roch and a friend of my mother. She had a warm smile and an easy laugh that made all those around her feel welcome. My thoughts and prayers are with her children and grandchildren.

  7. Heaven is welcoming Mrs. Mayer home. She was a gentle, kind hearted woman, teacher, leader, and mother to more than just her own children. Caring and willing to give extra guidance, teaching, a true role model. In her class that was the first time I remember wanting to grow up and work with children. One day I went home with her, got to play with her kittens. Later of which I was able to get. The deal was to do my homework, clean my room, keep it clean till the kitten was old enough to leave Mom. Thank you for showing your heart, love for Jesus, and inspiring many children to do their best. Rest in Peace ߒœ

  8. Heaven has called for a wonderful lady home. She was the kindest hearted person to everyone never new a stranger. And would do anything she could for anyone. Such a great friend to me and my family . Rest In Peace Pat. Prayers for all the family.

  9. Ms. Mayer was one of my most beloved teachers. She made me feel special and worthy at such an impressionable age and was held so dearly in my heart and thoughts often throughout the years. She impacted me more than I could ever express. Her presence on earth will be greatly missed but the reunion in Heaven is joyous I am quite certain.

  10. My heart goes out to your family for your loss. You have another angel now putting in a good word for you, camping throughout heaven with your dad.

  11. My deepest sympathy to the family. Pat was a fixture at St Roch. Always there to help the kids and work on committees. She will be missed.

  12. Mary Lou and family – I have fond memories of being at your home on S. Meridian, in high school, and your Mom would be outside gardening or cooking in the kitchen! Much love and prayers as you celebrate her life. Patty Short Ebner and family

  13. Pat was a delightful colleague at St. Roch as a teacher and then director of religious education. With Fr. John Sullivan, the three of us made a joyful team. In the embrace of her Creator, Pat now experiences eternal joy. My prayerful sympathy to Kathy, Mary Lou and all the family.

  14. To the Mayer family. So sorry for your loss. I met your dad when I started work at Bridgeport Brass in 1976. Your’s was the first family I met in Indiana. I still can see Mary Lou studying on the back porch and having Patty jump on my back and trying to bite me!!. I converted to Catholicism in 1992 and your mom was teaching the RCIA class. Heaven has gained a true angel. If you do have a memorial gathering, I would love to bet included. Fred Baldwin

  15. To the Mayer family, Pat was a life-long friend whom I greatly admired. She was a role model as a mother, teacher, and friend. I pray that God will grant her eternal life and my condolences to each of you. Love and prayers.
