  1. Richard was the best neighbor anyone could have —— he was kind caring and loveable to our kids and they loved him very much —- the Harper family

  2. Cousins Mike and Eric … know that our hearts are with you and your family. Your Momma was the best and Richard loved her so much that it was a joy to behold. Aunt Sue and Richard were great friends to our mom and dad. Their friendship was precious to our parents and they enjoyed their time together through the years, as time allowed. Richard was a great man and I know that you’ll feel his loss deeply. I’m happy to hear that he found love again after Aunt Sue, proof that God gives us a reason to live on. He lived a good life, was an honorable man, a beautiful soul who will be missed by many.

  3. Richard was a good neighbor and friend. Had many good times at the Beech Grove Eagles. God bless him in heaven, and all the faimily. Loved to hear the many colorful stories we shared.

  4. Dick, was always a good friend and a great guy to have a few drinks with. spent many a race day at his house with he and Caroline. Harry H. Keel

  5. Richard was a mentor, a friend, a fellow Viet Nam Veteran, and my brother. I was usually the bartender at the Christmas parties and the pool volleyball parties and considered it an honor to be invited every year. Richard and Carolyn Sue could throw a party, and the neighbors never complained because they LOVED the Shumates. I got to talk to Richard a few months ago and of course he was more interested in my health than he was his own, and he was so happy to tell me he had remarried and was so happy again to have his family to dote on. I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting LeAna, but Richard was so very happy with the life he now had, and he told me he hadn’t been this happy in years. I hope LeAna knows what joy she gave Richard the past few years. The Scott family sends our condolences and prayers to the Shumate family. God Bless You All!! RIP Brother, see you on the other side. Love You, Semper Fi!!
