Rita M. Kelter, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on June 14, 2025, in Greenwood, Indiana, with her cherished family by her side. Born on December 1, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, Rita’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, dedication, and a profound sense of family.
Rita devoted 22 years of her professional life to Bobbs – Merrill, culminating in her retirement in 1986 as the manager of accounts receivable. Following her rewarding career, she continued to contribute to her community as a bookkeeper for St. Mark Catholic Church, where she was also a cherished member. Her commitment to both her faith and her work, exemplified the principles she lived by every day. Faith, Family and love was important in her life.
Known for her warmth and kindness, Rita took great joy in being “GG” to her great-grandchildren, relishing her time spent with her beloved family. Her favorite moments were filled with the laughter and smiles of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, a true testament to the family values she instilled in them.
Rita enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests that reflected her vibrant personality. She was an excellent seamstress and quilter, crafting beautiful pieces that will be cherished by her family for generations to come. She was a fierce bridge player. An avid reader, she also loved watching sports, particularly her favorite team, the Indianapolis Colts. Her adventurous spirit led her on travels across the globe, including memorable journeys to Italy, France, England, Alaska, and the Caribbean.
Rita is survived by her four loving children, Christine (Duane) Fricke, Michael (Pam) Kelter, Steven (Louise) Kelter, and Paul (Mary) Kelter. She leaves behind a proud legacy of grandchildren, including Eric (Kristin) Fricke, Ryan (Meghan) Fricke, Nicole (Justin) Peters. Kristy (Nick) Allen, Ann (Dustin) Allison, Brandan (Jeri) Kelter, Michael (Rachel) Kelter, Nicole (Justin Zukowski) Kelter, Devin (Ron) O’Connor, along with her 16 adoring great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Michael Kelter, her father Joseph Markowski, her mother Josephine (Sadowski) Casey, and her brothers Carl, Gerald, Joseph and Peter Markowski and sister Alice Gorgoni.
As we remember Rita, we hold close the lessons she imparted through her grace and love, the laughter she shared with everyone around her, and the countless memories created at family gatherings that will forever warm our hearts. A visitation will be held on June 18, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and again on June 19, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, at O’Riley – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, 6107 S. East Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46227. Morning prayer service will be on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at 10:30 AM at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 AM at St. Mark Catholic Church, 535 Edgewood Ave., Indianapolis, Indiana, 46227. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
