Rita Michele Maguire

October 6, 1955 ~ July 25, 2023
Rita Michele (Kesterson) Maguire, passed away on July 25th following a courageous, nine -month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 67 years old.
Rita was born October 6, 1955, in Beech Grove and grew up on the southside of Indianapolis. As the fifth child in a large, Catholic family with 10 children – nine girls and one boy – Rita was at the center of everything.
Her childhood was filled with family activities and sports including intramural kickball, softball, and volleyball and swimming at Lake Shore Country Club and Lake Lemon. She graduated from Roncalli High School in 1974, where she was a drum majorette first class, then attended Indiana University, Bloomington and IUPUI. After graduating from Kelley School of Business with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Business, she began a fulfilling career which included roles at Eli Lilly, One America, and most recently, the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.
On August 4, 1979, one of the hottest days on record, she married Joseph Maguire after meeting him at a wedding when she was 18 years old. It can be argued that Rita and Joe may have met at birth as they were born in the same hospital, on the same day and year, and were even baptized on the same day.
Rita shared her passion for sports with her two children, Patrick and Anne, cheering them on in every sport in which they participated and coaching Anne in volleyball. Later, she used her work ethic, competitive spirit and determination to complete many half marathons and four marathons.
She especially loved spending time with her grandsons, Connor and Peter, and was their biggest cheerleader. She held them when they were sick, made them laugh, played catch with them, and attended as many baseball, soccer and basketball games as possible. They brought her tremendous joy, and she will continue to cheer them on from heaven throughout their lives.
Rita is preceded in death by her parents, John and Rita Kesterson; nephew, Jonathan Holbrook; and niece, Michele Bueno. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Joseph Maguire; her children, Patrick (Kristin) Maguire and Anne; grandchildren, Connor and Peter Maguire; siblings: Helen (Beth Yates) Kesterson; Kathleen (Daniel) Morrison; Diana Jean Kesterson; Therese (Lawrence) Holbrook; Joyce (Steve) Burke; Patricia (Charles) Souhrada; Karen Bueno; John (Ann) Kesterson; and Mary (Jamey) Smith, her aunt Sister James Michael Kesterson, S.P., and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend its deepest gratitude to the dedicated healthcare workers who cared for Rita, with special thanks to Dr. Christopher Leagre, Dr. Colleen Brown, and many caregivers at Ascension St. Vincent, IU Health, and Paradigm Hospice.
Rita was a devoted member of Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Rita was committed to keeping a Christian presence in downtown Indianapolis. She requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
Visitation will be held at O’Riley Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, 6107 S. East Street, Indianapolis, on Sunday, July 30 from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 126 W. Georgia Street, Indianapolis, on Monday, July 31, 2023 at 1:30 PM.

Brian and I send our condolences. May your heart be at peace, along with her heart being at peace.
Perhaps the great preparation for Rita’s homecoming moves me most. She was ready to meet Jesús. Spiritually and emotionally. Beautiful. Prayers for comfort and peace for all.

I dearly loved Rita! She lived in my neighborhood for years, sharing her basketball court on her driveway with my grandchildren! She had fall parties for the kids with all kinds of fun games. She was my political buddy as well! We had fun conversations! I have missed her since she moved and will now miss her more. God bless you, Joe. I am praying for you.

I am so very sorry Joe, Patrick, and Anne. Rita was one of a kind and a very special person with a great aura. I loved finding her at cross country meets as our children grew, always smiling and always so friendly. I spent a lot of time with her playing sports. I cherish those times. I loved her jokes and loved her smile. Plus you did not mess with her if she was angry or when she was drum major, lol. God must have wanted her because she would have fought this tooth and nail. Rest in sweet peace Rita. Tell Mr.K John and Mrs. K Rita hi from me. And to her siblings, man we had some good times and I imagine this is a very hard loss for you also. Love you all and so very sorry. Peace and hugs to you too. If the photo uploads Rita is in back row far right.
I am so sorry to hear and your loss. Prayers for peace and comfort.

Joe,
The more enriched a person makes our lives, the harder it is to let them go. Throughout their life they leave parts of themselves in each person they love. Cherish those gifts and Rita will be with each of you every day. You are in our hearts, thoughts and prayers.
Dear Joe, Patrick and Ann,
So many fun memories as Pat and Mark went through St Jude together. Many summers Rita babysat Mark taking them golfing and just letting them have fun in the neighborhood. My heart breaks for all of you. Such a caring and loving soul. And fun!!! Always laughing. Joe, you and Rita were a class act couple.
Just know she is with Jesus.
To Joe, kids, and whole Kesterson clan…..sincere condolences, & at this difficult time.

To Rita’s Husband, Joe, and to her Children, Patrick and Anne: I knew Rita at OneAmerica, where she impressed us all with her intelligence and dedication.
She was a wonderful, kind, funny, and truly remarkable person. Her loss will leave a void in the hearts of many, many of us who were fortunate enough to have known her. Her special kindness to me will NEVER be forgotten.
To Joe and the Kestrrson family. My deepest condolences to all of you. I have many fond memories of Rita and always enjoyed catching up with her at Jackie and Bob’s events. My best memory of her is when we were in the same college class at IUPUI in the early 80’s. Being Rita and 5 years older, she took the course more seriously than I did. She worked so hard on the paper we had due and I just followed the steps outlined and got a better grade then her. She was so angry at the professor. I loved her energy and zest for life. She will be sorely missed.
