Shirley L. Parrett

November 4, 1928 ~ July 25, 2021
Shirley L. Parrett, 92, lifelong resident of Indianapolis, passed away on July 25, 2021 at the Franciscan Hospice House. Shirley was born on November 4, 1928 to the late George and Thelma (Underwood) Young.
Shirley wed Thomas William Parrett on January 5, 1946; Thomas preceded Shirley in death after 69 wonderful years of marriage. This loving union produced their 3 children, Betty, Thomas, and Robert. Shirley was her children’s strongest advisor who always met them with unconditional love and warmth in her role as the consummate mother.
Beyond being a dedicated mother and wife, Shirley had a hardworking spirit. She was employed by Darko and Sons Dry Cleaners from 1946 up until their closing in 1970. She then went on to work as Louis L. Darko’s personal assistant in his commercial real estate business from 1970 until Mr. Darko’s death in 1997.
When not working, Shirley enjoyed time spent with her children and grandchildren. She was an excellent cook who will be remembered for her special chicken and noodles (otherwise known as, “Nanny’s Noodles”) and her oyster and sausage dressings. If she did not have a grandchild in her embrace, she could often be found holding a book, out shopping, or being sociable with her many friends. Shirley took many memorable trips to Myrtle Beach and multiple cruises.
A dedicated Catholic, Shirley joined the church and was initially a member at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Indianapolis. Most recently, Shirley maintained her membership at Our Lady of the Greenwood Catholic Church.
Shirley was a beloved Nanny to each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Despite having quite a few, she maintained a special relationship and bond with each of them through their overnight stays and after school hours. Her beautiful, patient spirit with a generous heart of gold will be missed by all her loved ones she leaves behind.
Survivors include her children and their spouses, Betty Conklin, Thomas (Renee) Parrett, and Robert (Judith) Parrett; her grandchildren, Kristen Doogan, Boone Thomas Parrett, Whitney Moore, Blake Parrett, Michael Parrett, Kellie Caito, Amanda English, Kevin Parrett, Angela Harrington, Daniel Parrett, Nicholas Parrett, Lucas Parrett, Christopher Parrett, Jessica Parrett, Joseph Parrett, Jonathon Parrett, and Rachel Thacker; 19 great grandchildren; and a host of extended family members and friends.
Along with her parents and husband, Shirley is preceded in death by her brother, George Young and Sister, Norma “Young” Bowling.
