Shirley (Wendling) Carroll

April 20, 1935 ~ May 8, 2021
Shirley (Wendling) Carroll, 86, lifelong Indianapolis resident passed away May 8, 2021. Mrs. Carroll was born April 20, 1935, to the late Frank and Stella (Wissel) Wendling. She married Jack Carroll on May 11, 1957, and he survives.
Shirley graduated second in her class at Sacred Heart High School, where she was a class officer all four years. She worked briefly as a secretary at Fort Benjamin Harrison before becoming a stay at home mom while raising her children. She later was a framer for her neighbor’s business, Frame it Yourself, and also worked as a receptionist for her son-in-law, Dr. Joe LaRosa. Her favorite vocation was as a devoted wife, mother, and doting grandma. Shirley loved all kinds of crafts, playing cards and never turned down a competitive game of Aggravation. She was the consummate mother and grandmother – a gifted listener, wonderful cook, and was beyond helpful. Shirley will be fondly remembered by her loving family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings, Bob Wendling, Rosie Bruhn, and Jean Burden.
Survivors include husband of nearly 64 years, Jack; children, Gregory (Michelle) Carroll, Christina (Dr. Joe) LaRosa, Cathy (Bill) Holland, and Lisa (Jim) Feltz; sisters, Betty Buergler and Carol (Tom) Lippert; 13 grandchildren; two great grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, May 14, 2021, 5 – 7 p.m., at the O’Riley Funeral Home, 6107 S. East Street. The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 15, 2021, in St. Barnabas Catholic Church, of which she was a member. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. The family is appreciative of having a Mass said in Shirley’s memory in lieu of sending flowers. Visit www.ORileyFuneralHome.com to share a favorite memory or to sign the online guest registry.
It was always wonderful to see she and Mr Carroll at 5pm Saturday mass in support of the music ministers. And she had a wonderful smile for all.
Lisa, so sorry on the loss of your mom. Thoughts and prayers with you and your family.
How awesome that she made it to Dominic’s wedding!! She looked beautiful!! She raised a wonderful family!! Prayers for her and the family.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Shirley and I worked together at Frame It Yourself and became lifelong friends. Shirley took me under her wings and taught me the fine art of stretching counted cross-stitch, thinking she’d be free of doing them. NOT! Poor Shirley “dear” never found anyone to do them as well as her! After I moved away she would write me long letters, which I call my Bombeck stash because, like Erma Bombeck, Shirley had a wicked sense of humor. She was always there with a willing ear and sage advice if needed. She will be sorely missed by all who were honored to have had her in their lives. And Shirley “dear” I am praying there are no cross stitches in heaven!!
So sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Anne Eacret
