Stephen Joseph Schaefer

Stephen Joseph Schaefer, 75, of Indianapolis, passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2017. He was born in Indianapolis on June 14, 1941 to Joseph Francis and Dorothy Marie Shannon Schaefer. Steve attended Xavier University and was a graduate of Marian University. He was an Army veteran serving during the Vietnam War. He was an accountant and worked at Stokely Van Camp and Egenolf Machine before his retirement. Steve was a member of St. Roch Catholic Church where he spent many years as a youth sports coach and was the recipient of the Msgr.Albert Busald Award in 1985. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Monsignor Downey Council 3660. Steve was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Michael Schaefer; granddaughter, Isabel Schaefer; and great granddaughter, Ella Tanner. He is survived by his wife, Mary Anne Gallamore Schaefer; son, Joseph (Kimberly) Schaefer; daughters, Santina Page (David), Dorothy Carothers (Joseph), and Terese Blackmon (Todd); sisters, Christine Rebic (Stephen), Barbara Thomas (Robert), and brother, Gregory Schaefer (Cindy); 18 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 10, 2017 at 10 a.m. at St. Roch Catholic Church, 3600 S. Pennsylvania Street, Indianapolis, IN. Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2017 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Daniel F. O’Riley Funeral Home, 6107 S. East Street (US Hwy 31 South), Indianapolis, IN where morning prayers will be said on Friday at 9:30 a.m. prior to Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
