Susan Kay Fiwek

November 20, 1948 ~ March 3, 2021
Susan Kay Fiwek, 72, peacefully passed away with her immediate family by her side on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, in Greenwood, Indiana. Sue was born Susan Kay Nemeth on November 20, 1948, in South Bend, Indiana, to Louis and Eileen Nemeth. She married her high school love, Michael A. Fiwek, on August 29, 1970, and they were married over 39 years before Mike passed away in 2010.
Sue graduated from South Bend Washington High School in 1967, and she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education (Social Studies) from Indiana University in 1974. She served the State of Indiana for 13 years under Secretaries of State Larry Conrad and Ed Simcox in the Corporations Division legal department and then as the Corporations Division’s Public Information Deputy and Chief Deputy Director. She was then appointed by Simcox as acting Deputy Secretary of State as Director of the Corporations Division overseeing matters of personnel, budget, and general operations. She subsequently served the State of Indiana over 20 years in the Office Services Section and Purchasing Department of the Indiana Department of Highways (later Indiana Department of Transportation), retiring in 2008, to care for and guide Mike with his journey with Alzheimer’s.
Sue was generous not only with family and friends but also volunteering with Special Olympics of Indiana and Meals on Wheels as needed. She loved to travel, shop, play euchre, and especially loved to read. She had a great sense of humor and warmth, and she loved to laugh with and also support, care for, and be with her family and friends. She will be missed so much by them all.
Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Mike, and parents Lou and Eileen Nemeth. She is survived by her immediate family—brother, Chuck (April) Nemeth of Greenwood, IN, and nephews Brad Nemeth and Greg Nemeth of Greenwood. She also leaves behind brothers-in-law Don (Gay) Fiwek of South Bend, IN, Rick (Marilynn) Fiwek of Aurora, CO, and Joe (Elaine) Fiwek of Elkhart, IN. She is also survived by 7 other nieces and nephews and their families: Neil Fiwek of Angola, IN; Shelly Sanders of Elkhart, IN; Todd Fiwek of Parker, CO; Kim Broker of Centennial, CO; Mike Fiwek of Plymouth, IN; and Katie Donat and Matt Fiwek of Elkhart, IN.
There will be no public visitation but Sue wants to have a celebration of life party later in the year, when the darn COVID lifts, for her close family and friends, and there will be a private interment at Greenwood Cemetery.
Daniel F. O’Riley Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Memorial contributions (in lieu of flowers) may be made in Sue’s name to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Michigan – Indiana Region at LLS – Michigan PO Box 772374 Detroit, MI 48277-2374.

When I think about my most important and fond memories as a child I always remember our annual Fiwek Christmases. Aunt Sue and Uncle Mike were a big part of those times and those memories. I love you both so much and will miss you Aunt Sue.
We saw where my niece posted her RIP to Sue my sister-in-law and ended with Till we meet again. My song that I associate to all the loved ones and friends lost in my time here. If my memory is correct it has been since 1966 that I met Sue. So many stories to tell here. I’ll save them for when I’m with family and friends. Always in my heart, in my memories. What a great ride of life. Happy trails to you, until we meet again. Happy trails to you, keep smilin’ until then. Who cares about the clouds when we’re together? Just sing a song and bring the sunny weather. Happy trails to you, ’till we meet again. Some trails are happy ones, Others are blue. It’s the way you ride the trail that counts, Here’s a happy one for you. Happy trails to you, until we meet again Sue I’ll See you on the flip side. Say hi to Mike for me.
Sue was always funny, zany even. I enjoyed getting to know her.
My condolences to Sue’s family. I first met Sue 6 years ago when she subbed for card club(euchre). Then she took my spot for a year so I could go back to cosmetology school. Then got fake mad when I came back!ߤ£ I always wore my jammy pants to card club cuz it ticked her off that I would wear them outside the house…but I knew she loved me nonetheless. We liked to pick on each other. I will be wearing the jammy pants she bought for me one Christmas to card club in remembrance of her. Awesome memories of her and I will never forget her. Summer Perry
Sue was a awesome lady. We share the passion of reading alot. She was my neighbor for 33yrs before we more 3bks away. She was awesome . Will miss you but not forgotten. Love and prayers are with you all ❤ߙ
Sue and Mike Fiwek were two people who made my SBOA career better. Mike with the SBOA and Sue when she worked at the Secretary of State and Indiana Department of Transportation. I will miss them both.
I first met Sue in the late 60’s at IU when she was dating my new friend Mike Fiwek from South Bend. Over many years we all attended countless IU basketball games and NCAA tournaments. In more recent times Sue and I have done our best to make the Shelbyville Casino profitable. I will miss her greatly.
I met Sue when I went to work at the Secretary of States office. I had already met Mike, he was SBA auditor at the Real Estate Commission where I had a part time job. Instantly we were friends. We shared memories socially as well, Euchre Club, countless dinners and lunches. Personal events and mutual friends. We continued to meet for lunch each month, and always looked forward to seeing her. I spoke with her on the 21st of February where I told her how much she and Mike’s friendship meant to me and I loved her. I am pleased I had a chance to talk to her. I will sadly miss her. May she Rest In Peace.
To a beloved sister n law and aunt. You will always be in our thoughts.
