Timothy Hayes

January 31, 1937 ~ November 14, 2016
Timothy Hayes passed away peacefully on November 14th among his very large and loving Irish clan. Born January 31, 1937, Tim was one of 6 children born to James and Gertrude Hayes. He attended St. Catherine Grade School and Cathedral High School.
He met his future bride Charleen “Cookie” O’Connor on December 1, 1957 at an Irish Baptism and they were married on May 14, 1960 . . and they were inseparable ever since.
Tim joined the Indianapolis Police Department in December, 1961, spending 22 years serving the citizens of Indianapolis as a beat cop, a court bailiff, a detective in the juvenile division and finished his career as an auto theft detective. He retired in January 1983. Following his retirement, Tim became an active partner in their family business, H & H Catering. In later years, “Public Relations” became more of a passion than frying chicken. Though never a handyman, he joined forces with his sons to form Indianapolis Lock and Safe.
He was an active member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Knights of Columbus, serving as the Grand Knight of Council #3660 from 1984 – 1985 and State Social Director and Executive Secretary for many years. He was active in Democrat politics with his lifelong confidante and brother in law, John C. Christ. He spent many years coaching football at St. Catherine Grade School with his best friend Big Mike McHugh, leading their teams to many city championships.
He passionately loved Notre Dame football and cherished being a season ticket holder, giving him the opportunity to share this love with his children and grandchildren. In more recent years, he especially cherished his time spent at his cottage on Lake Manitou, driving his pontoon.
Tim is survived by his wife of 56 years and their children: Kathleen and Marty Lynch, Peggy and Marty Murphy, Patty and Mark Liegibel, Danny and Tina Hayes, Dennis and Katie Hayes; grandchildren, Sean and KG Lynch, Daniel and Lindsey Lynch, Kerry Lynch, Clay and Colt Hayes, Timothy and Erin Delaney, Terrence and Heather Delaney, Courtney Delaney (Zach Mink), Chris and Joelle Delaney, Ryan, Amanda and Lauren Murphy, Jackie, Connor (Brooke Burmeister) Kevin and McKenzie Liegibel, Maggie and Vivie Hayes, Kennedy and Case Hayes; great grandchildren, Emma, Brantley, Finley and Wade Lynch, Connor and Ashtyn Delaney; sisters, Ellen Brown and Mary Ann Chrisman.

Sending prayers to your family <3
What a good man from a great family! Prayers for all involved.
To the Hayes family: With a heavy heart I pen this expression of sympathy to all of you, especially Cookie! Oh what a life Tim had. Oh how blest you all were to be loved so much by such a memorable and charismatic man. Tim touched thousands of lives and we all are better for having known him. May the road rise to meet him and until we meet again may God hold him in the palm of His hands. My loving prayers are for all of you as you now (again) must walk this grief path. Loving hugs, Marianne Schafer Ries
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hayes family through this difficult time. Words do an injustice in explaining how much we will miss Tim. He will remain very alive in our memories and admiration. He was a great man, story teller & union brother. CWA Local 4900
Cookie and the entire Hayes family, our heart goes out to you all at this difficult time. We’ll always remember Tim fondly and feel blessed that we had the pleasure of knowing him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Cookie: I want to offer you my deepest sympathy upon the loss of Tim. I have so many good memories of Tim from years ago. He meant so much to mom and dad. He was always there for them when needed; but what else would you expect from Tim. I will always remember his chuckle. As paraphrased from “The Irish Prayer”: May the sun shine upon his face and May The Lord hold him in the palm of His hand. Similarly paraphrased from “On Eagles Wings”: He will raise Tim up on eagles’ wings and make him shine like the sun and hold Tim in the palm of His hands. What better place to be than in The Lord’s hands. Tim will make heaven brighter with his smile and laughter. We are not saying goodbye to Tim. We are wishing him “Arrivederci”- the Italian word- until we meet again. In his love for Notre Dame, on our next visit to Notre Dame, I will light a candle at “The Grotto” in Tim’s memory and have a Mass in Tim’s honor at The Basilica of The Sacred Heart. Always in our thoughts and prayers: Tony and Joanie Cossell
To Danny and Tina Hayes, I am sorry for your loss. Prayers of peace and comfort to you and your family during this difficult time.

On behalf of the Société de Police – IPD Adam & Edward, our condolences to the family and friends of our fellow/freind, Timothy Hayes, on learning of his assing from this life. This is a day I and others are mourning the loss of another of our fellows, while others previously departed are rejoicing to meet him behind the veil. Although it’s difficult today to see beyond this 35th sorrow of 2016, for all who knew and shared friendship with this good man, may looking back in memory help comfort our tomorrows. To Cookie and the family, Helen Keller wrote: “What we have once enjoyed we can never lose… All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” So true too that parting is such sweet sorrow, I’m just glad Tim crossed paths with a guy like me. For Tim, I offer the following prayer, “Eternal Rest grant unto Timothy Hayes, Oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.’ ~ Requiem Æternam | Salute! ~

Tim was a friend, as was Cookie. We served on the Gibault board together and we were big supporters. we were big critics, too. I’m sure management cheered when we both resigned in protest. Didn’t matter though, management got fired a few weeks later. I am also sure the KofC never recovered from our duet of Danny Boy at the state convention. I’ll drink a toast to an Irish friendship.
Danny, Tina and family, I am deeply saddened by your loss. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers
The entire Evans family is so sad about the loss of Tim. We were out of town, so were not able to be with you. May God grant you peace on your great loss. Mary Ann and John Evans
