Velta L. Ban

September 1, 1924 ~ August 31, 2022
Velta L. (Sutton) Ban, 97, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2022 following a recent decline in health.
Velta was born September 1, 1924, to Gledis and Clayton Sutton at the family farm near Clearspring, IN. Upon graduation from Clearspring High School, she moved to Indianapolis. There, she found employment at P.R. Mallory, where she quickly caught the eye of Frank Ban. Upon seeing her, Frank “told his buddies he was going to marry her.” They married on December 4, 1943 and had 3 sons – Jerry (Maggie), John (Linda) and Joe (Beth). They celebrated 67 years of marriage before Frank died at age 99 in 2011.
In addition to her parents and husband, Velta is predeceased by her son Joe and her sisters Bonnie Davidson, Mary Sutton and Ruth Cummings. Her sons Jerry and John; daughters-in-law Maggie, Linda and Beth; grandsons Michael, Jerry, J.P., Jerrett and Jeremy Ban; granddaughters Jennifer Polomsky and Julia Morgan; and 16 great-grandchildren survive her. Also special to her were her Danville neighbors Kevin and Ann Tussey, whom she loved like family.
For more than 25 years, Velta was a receptionist at Link-Belt Company, retiring in 1986. She then volunteered at Hendricks Regional Hospital in Danville, IN as part of the sewing guild and was commended for volunteering over 3,000 hours. She lived in Danville for over 40 years and was a member of Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church. In 2019, she moved to Independence Village in Zionsville.
When not camping and fishing with Frank, especially enjoying “roughing it” in Montana and Alaska, Velta was busy sewing, quilting or crocheting. She made sure all her family members had a handmade quilt and each new baby received “their” quilt and crocheted blankets and hats, even her latest great-grandchild who was born in April. She was blessed to be able to attend every grandchild’s wedding and see them become parents.
Services will be held on Tuesday, September 6, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 14598 Oak Ridge Road, Carmel, IN. Viewing will start at 9 a.m. with Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Indianapolis following the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Velta’s name to IU Health Foundation to benefit Simon Cancer Center, PO Box 775589, Chicago, IL 606 775589
Sent with love and remembrance,
Always enjoyed seeing Velta at Mary, Queen of Peace church. She had a cute sense of humor and a twinkle in her eye. Thinking of you all, Jack & Margie Williams
With our deepest sympathy, Don Davidson, Angie, Leslie, and Joel
Lovely memorial reflecting Velta’s beautiful life and family.
I met Velta at Link-Belt over 60 years ago. My Father and brothers worked there too, and I met my future husband, Bob, there. Bob and I remember her as a lovely and classy woman. She was easy to remember.
