Richard F. Heidelberger

February 15, 1929 ~ November 15, 2020
Richard Fredrick Heidelberger, 91, Greenwood, passed away November 15, 2020. Richard was born February 15, 1929, to the late Teresa Risch and Fred Heidelberger. Dick graduated from Cathedral High School in 1947. On February 18, 1950, he married the love of his life Rosemary Allen.
They had seven children, Mark & the late Debbie, Mike & Karen, the late Timothy, Dave & Judy, Dan & Olga, Dennis & Deniese, Chris & Mike Wise. He has 18 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Family was the most important thing in his life. Dick is survived by his wife of 70 years, Rosemary; his sister, Roseann & Harold Acker.
In his early life, he was a milkman, and some of the children looked like the milkman. Then he ran an ice cream truck, and the children ate all of the profits. His best job was working in purchasing at IPL; he retired in 1991 after 30 years of employment.
His greatest accomplishment was the log cabin he built. He acquired old poles at IPL, hewed them out, and numbered them. Together with his sons, they built the cabin which stands today on the beautiful farm property they had. The cabin was written about in several papers.
He loved the firemen at White River Township Station #51. Every other week they got cookies and brownies. It melted his heart to see them come running to the door when the delivery was made.
Dick and Rosemary were charter members of SS Francis & Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, where visitation will take place on Wednesday, November 18, 2020, from 12:30 – 2 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 2 p.m., followed by entombment at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Franciscan Hospice or to the Harvest Food Pantry at SSFC. O’Riley Funeral Home is serving the family. Our prayers & thoughts are with the Heidelberger friends & family.
Rest in peace, Dick. I still remember the days when you and Rosie were so active at St. Roch…..and Rosie and Pat Heidenreich were the best of friends! You raised a wonderful family. Your son, Mark, did the best job remodeling our front porch into a bigger living room for our expanding family…..and creating our wonderful summer room! May you rest in peace. I am sorry Joe and I can’t come to the funeral. Love to all your family… Bonnie Schott
Dick was a very good friend and colleague at IPL. We had many lunches with vendors at the old King Cole restaurant. I remember the woodpeckers driving him crazy when he built his log home. RIP, Michael Baldwin
So sorry to hear about the death of a great man and father. You are all in our thoughts, Tanja and Jim Keay
Rest in Peace, Dick. How I loved seeing your smiling face (and Rosemary’s) at 7:00 a.m. Mass just about every Sunday morning! What a great start to my week! You were a shining example of faith, hope, and cheerful optimism through every situation. You will be missed! love, Sherrill Hofer (SS Francis and Clare)
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. I grew up as a Jansen, he delivered many a milk bottle to 3130. He always had that 100 watt smile. He even let us eat extra ice chips from the truck. Great childhood experience!
Heart in memory of Richard F. Heidelberger
Rosemary and Family, I always found Dick to be a good friend. Whether working with his serious face at Power and Light or laughing with him and his ‘smiling’ face at a church function.. Please accept our condolences and prayers. John and Deb Madden
Dick was the first neighbor we met after moving in. He rapidly became the unofficial social chairman of the court. If the garage door was up; it was “all welcome” including all dogs. Even Maggie knew an open door meant a biscuit or two or 5 if Rosemary wasn’t watching. And if she jumped in his lap, all was good.
